The Most Exciting Play in Baseball
Philadelphia has begun the '86 season with an uninspiring 1-4 start. Now they welcome in the first place Pittsburgh Pirates, winners of four straight. Phils starter Scott Bankhead was staked to an early 2-0 lead which he squandered in the top of the fifth by way of a four-run meltdown. The Phillies were still in it at 5-3 heading into the 9th when reliever Tom Gorman allowed RBI hits by Rafael Belliard and Barry Bonds to make it 7-3.
Bucco reliever Cecilio Guante did his best to instill hope in the Fightins by walking eight-hole hitter Alfredo Griffin and pinch-hitter Jeff Stone to start the bottom of the ninth. Pat Clements was inserted to try to put out the fire. Milt Thompson greeted Clements with a single to load the bases. Juan Samuel followed with a sac fly to score Griffin and bring Alvin Davis to the plate in a 7-4 game. Davis ripped a single to once again pack the sacks. Perhaps fearing the long ball, Clements proceeded to walk Mike Schmidt which forced in Stone. Ron Roenicke then tied the game with a two-run single. Gary Redus hit into a fielder's choice with Mike Schmidt reaching third. It's now runners at the corners with two outs for light-hitting catcher John Russell. Here's Harry Kalas with the call: Schmidty at third, Redus at first, two outs here in the ninth... The first pitch to Russell... Swung on and missed 0 and 1. Clements ready with the 0-1... Outside for a ball. Clements gets the sign and comes set... The 1-1 pitch... BALK! THE SECOND BASE UMPIRE IS CALLING A BALK! MIKE SCHMIDT JOGS HOME WITH THE WINNING RUN! THE PHILLIES WIN 8-7 ON A BALK BY PAT CLEMENTS! WHAT A WILD FINISH HERE AT VETERANS STADIUM! |

Really cool. Baseball...pitch by pitch...the only way to play!

The game has come a long way. In OOTP3, a walk-off passed ball would cause a crash.
