Golfer throws match to allow rival to advance to nat'l finals

Fascinating twists to this story.

University of St. Francis (Ill.) golfer Grant Whybark has become a national name in light of his decision to intentionally lose a playoff for his conference tournament's individual title and allow an opponent to advance to the national finals.

It should be added that he already had a spot to Nationals secured so he didn't give up his spot, he just wanted his rival to join him.

Making sure the entire world knows you threw the hole: Douchey.

If I was the other kid, I would decline my trip to the nationals.

The kid should be ashamed of himself. No one wants this sort of thing given to them.

As per usual, the National Enquirer (my term for all of todays media) can be thanked for that.

I have a different take on this.

The dude that already had his ticket to the nationals was in a PLAYOFF with the other guy. He wasn't ahead, at all.

The other guy had already hit safely in the fairway.

This gutless choker couldn't face losing the playoff, so he lost on purpose. Now, he gets to be the good guy, instead of losing the playoff for the singles title.

The key here is that the other guy had already hit in the fairway safely. He was in no trouble.

The "good" guy didn't give anything away...he had more than a 50% chance of losing, because the other guy was already in the fairway.

I wouldn't call him a gutless choker, but I agree that your spin on this might be possible.

Sounds like it could happen.

Did somebody else get knocked out because of this choice?

If so, what happened to fair competition and having the best win? Always do your best and the best man or team wins. I didn't know there were teams in Golf. Is this NASCAR?

The kid who got in goes to Olivet Nazarene University. I feel sorry for him just for that because it's a Christian college. They have dress codes and rules against fraternization and all that. I view this as a reward for having to go to such a crap school to be on their golf team

Being from a nice, strict Christian school, I am sure that he has developed a nice, firm grip. For his club. Golf club.
