historical accuracy through the years
A question about the historical accuracy of player performance in historical leagues:
Is performance of each individual player in the historical league mirrored to their real life performance over the course of their career? For example, in real life Ross Barnes played from 1871 to 1881. Does that mean he will do the same in the historical league? Will his performance curve be the same as well? Or a guy who only played 2 years in real life. Would that also be the same for him in the historical league? |

This can go both ways but not sure on that. I think statistical he would be within 2 standard deviations. Example: In my 1871 League, Al Pratt went 11-15 in his first year. In real life he went 10-17. Very close. The trouble with being a historical league if you do not have the retire according to history box checked, you could have a crappy or average player continue to play and put up decent numbers over the course of his career. Another example; Elmer White played one year: 15 games .257 hitter. In my 1871 League he played 28, 30, and 40 games from 1871 to 1873. He hit .323, .292, and .376 during that time. Now I do not know anything about Elmer, he looks like a average/crap player. If the player plays more that he really did, then there is more chances to be better, worse, or great.

You don't know anything about Deacon White's brother (or cousin or whatever he was)? For shame!

And sometimes the unusual developments are fun.
I just ran an unattended sim from 1871 - 2010. In that sim, Marvelous Marv Thornberry hit 60 HR in 1964, setting the season record and ended up hit 633 HRs in his career. Much more than his real career total of 53. ![]() But if you have Recalc turned on, and the Retire Player According to History box checked, you should end up with some pretty accurate results.
