PING: Logo Makers - do you ask permission to use logos?

Logo makers, I'm just curious, when you find a logo/an image to use in your logo creation, do you ask permission to use it? Or do you just use it because it's posted on a very public internet?

A large number of the logos I make borrow from public domain libraries of clips, yet I've been known to take watermarks off of logos, at like istockphoto for example, as well if I find a really great one. Recently, however, I take images I find, and recreate their likeness in vector format, so I guess that's better than blatant copying.

I don't mind borrowing logos, though I primarily use them for my own purposes and generally don't distribute them. If I distributed them, I might feel bad. But we aren't using them for profit, so only a little bad.

I don't profit financially from any work I do, therefore, I don't see any problem with using any logos. That said, I don't think I've ever used a logo from a private site.

Private site meaning a company or person that creates logos for a living? What about this: Chris Creamer's Sports Logos Community -> Concepts

Many logo sites do have disclaimers. They state the logos are for historical purposes and are property of their owners. They also state the logos are not for commercial purposes. Even these sites are ambiguous.

I've been painting cars for NASCAR Racing Season 2003 for years and I do recall a few painters being requested to not use certain logos. On the other hand a few have been asked to paint fictional cars for use in their advertising. Some have even been paid or compensated. A few companies have had competitions to paint their cars, such as Kevin Harvick's Reese's Peanut Butter Cups car. For a while Indy 500 lawyers were very vigilant about using their logos since they had contracts with software companies to use there copyrighted material.

I agree with Gern44 and TribeFanInNC. As long as we respect their property and don't make a profit there should not be any issues. I'll continue to use logos posted on the internet as long as I don't have lawyers trying to send me to prison.

As I was working on the MLB logo project I just completed, I don't know how many time I though about not releasing it to the board. It took of trademark's off logos and wondered what would happen if I violated a law because of the game. I am not distributing them for financial gain, but you never know who you might piss off.

Some of the fonts I bought off letterhead fonts I had to wait until working hours and actually talk to a representative because they are so hardcore about copyright laws. You just never know sometimes.

Creamers site is an excellent resource. He obviously put a ton of time and effort into it, and my guess is that he did it with the intent that people would use the collect logos. The Concepts page is certainly different from the rest of the site, but I think the fact that he put them out there means he isn't opposed to them being used... as long as its not for profit.

This is exactly as I suspected so far.
