Using a starter as a reliever
I have an average start who is on his 2nd year of $100,00 salary. I want to put him in as a mop-up guy, since he's not that great anyway (he's 26 with 5s for ratings). I have salary problems and this would save me a bundle instead of signing a guy for a million or two dollars. What success have people had doing this? Will my guy blow 8 run leads or will he perform decent enough to get by? Will this "ruin" him?
Thanks! neef |

If he is only average, mop role may be the best job for him. If he is young enough maybe he will learn some new talents.
Starter or relief tag do not really matter. His ratings will till if he does well or not. Seems like a good guy for long relief.

He should do fine, as good as if he were rated as a MR. Even though SP's that relieve will send you emails stating they want to start games, I have seen no evidence in dozens (actually 100+) of seasons that this has any negative impact on the player. If there is an impact it might be that a younger player not given starts might not develope to his full potential. The guy you are talking about is not that young and it sounds like he has developed to his potential already anyway. Seems like a safe thing to do

This was a strategy Earl WEaver often used, putting young starters into the bullpen in long relief until they were ready to join the rotation. Less pressure on them and they still get to be in the bigs and pitch 5-6 innings each week. Might have to try it out to see how successful this is at improving young pitchers.
