Red face My Lord!!....TERRIBLE REVIEW ...Please READ EVERYONE!

http://www.gamersmark.com/reviews/view/157

Folks...dont walk but RUN to this website and read the review this game got and give this website a piece of your mind for having such an irresponsible and immature reviewer discredit such a fine game!

It's a short read and it got my blood boiling especially when one of his quotes was, "...Anyone who buys this game should be SHOT!..."

I kid you not!......PLEASE check out the review and simply leave some feedback to the owners of the website by clicking the CONTACT US link to the left.....He shouldnt be reviewing games with a mentality like his!

I am so fuming and mad right now to think that hundreds maybe thousands of people will read that read review and possibly base a decision not to buy this wonderful game because of it!...that is just plain irresponsible of someone when they have absolutely no grounds, basis, or support to put together such a unprofessional review!

MAKE SURE YOU ALL LEAVE FEEDBACK to the website owners of that page...please!

heres the link again!

I read the review and it looks like a 13 year old kid wrote it. What is amazing is the site lets this dumb ass write reviews.

I've got no problem with someone giving it a poor review. really, the game ISN'T for everyone - baseball fans, sim fans, and numbers people love it (that would be us). But I can certainly see why people who aren't into this sort of thing would not like the game.

I wouldn't put too much into the review - check out the other reviews he did - ET and MotoRacer 3. They are full of typos and spelling mistakes, and the guy writes like an 8-year old with a caffeine high.

(from the ET review):
"I strongly suggest that if your interested in them you get all of the games. Its the only way I could see playing them. As they all intertwine via story."

LOL.

There already some good comments blasting the kids rating.

He does give it props for its "cool" calculations.

Edit - removed inaccurate information.

That review is a shining example of why I normally don't read reviews. I put a lot more stock in the feedback from the users who actually spend more than 5 minutes with a game.

The bottom line is that I like the game; everybody here likes the game and to ignore the review. Baseball and baseball pc games are not for everyone. Even my girlfriend cannot figure out why I play OOTP so much, but I know why!

guys,...Ignoring it is fine for us because we already own the game..but what about the unfortunate others that may read this review and pass up on a fantastic game??...We owe it to them to at least put in a request/complaint to seriously screen their reviewers a little better. There is absolutely nothing wrong with writing a bad review of a game....but hell, make sure it has supporting points, incidents and examples of its problems....( and positives for that matter )

That's what makes a good reviewer...someon who can back up their statements with supporting examples. This guy has none.....We owe it to the readers out there to at least voice our opinion of this writer.....He sucks!

Here is my assessment of the guys review:

quote:

Baseball has long been an American tradition. There is not one person in america who hasn't heard of or played the sport. However, there is another side to baseball that the majority of the world hasn't taken part in. General Management!.

Ok

quote:

When I first started playing I noticed that this was no normal baseball game. Everything, and I mean everything is customizable. I'm not a huge sport nut but I found it sort of RPG-like with all the numbers and what not. My only complain is how long it takes to load. For a game/sim this simple there is no excuse for the huge loading times.

RPG-like, umm sure... the numbers are the key part of any sim. Loading times.... hmmm has this kid ever played any other sims? It takes a while to load the huge database for this "simple" sim. This is another prime exhibit of the average person calling any game that doesn't have 3-D rendered guys running around shooting up the place "simple". Another bad sign when a guy reviewing a sports game admits to not being a huge fan.

quote:

Is it fair to even throw this one in? I guess not. First off the game is all done with simple 2D pages. They are pretty but couldn't they have added some flash? Also another dissapointing aspect is the lack of sound. I don't know if it was my computer but I couldnt get any sound to work. Jesus Christ what is the world coming too when you can't even hear your mouse click in a game?

Mmm.. ok, what sounds did he want? If he'd press down harder he'd hear his mouse click. Of course it seems like OOTP/STB will be getting sounds in the future so this will end up being a point where the reviewers can claim the sound stinks. What kind of "flash" did he expect?

quote:

There really isn't a lot to say here. The game is pretty much a sports nut's sim city. The biggest thing I can compare it to is Yahoo's fantasy sports games. Only a lot more in depth. Another really cool feature is the online leagues. While I can't really see joining such a thing myself its pretty cool. You can build your team and join a league online and play to see who is the better general manager. Along side that you can also trade players, scout, and get fantasy league news through your GM email. The funniest thing is they even added a mode where you can challenge and umpire's decesion. I guess the comic relief comes from when the umpire thinks your a complete ******* and throws you out.

First cuss words generally don't have any place in a professional review. A sports nut sim city.. not sure if I agree with this, as here you are trying to do something; win, where as in Sim City you build your city and watch it go. Apparently he thinks that you get fantasy news from your GM email (which of course just plain isn't true). Apparently the argue the call feature is now a standard "mode" and is only there to see if you get thrown out. I wonder just how many games did he play..

quote:

Number crunchers and Sports buff's will find this game fun. Personally I hate it. I give it props for its cool calculations

We get props for cool calculations, yeah. Except we don't do anything special, just your basic averages and stuff... hmmm. He then points out the games target audience and mentions that they'll like it. But not without mentioning that he "hates" it.

quote:

This game really shouldnt have been made. If anyone spends over 10 bucks for it they ought to be shot. However, my personal biases should not be your opinion. Try it out for yourself. But, im warning you!

OK he does mention his bias shouldn't be your opinion, which is good. But that the game shouldn't have been made, and that customers should be shot is out of line. His late warning is unnecssary.

Overall opinion.

The reviewer shouldn't have been selected to review the game. Apparently he doesn't like sports, which taints the review right from the start, secondly the reviewers maturity definitely comes under scrutiny with the language and expressions used. The review overall is very shallow (just over 3 paragraphs) and doesn't touch on many features. The sites rating system is very graphics/sound orientated (half their ratings are sound, graphics, and presentation). Missing are categories for things that really matter, like depth, replayability.

My overall impression is the site or at least the reviewer seems to be a young teenager trying to find a cool way to score free copies of video games. He seems to have put about 1 hour (if that) of time into the game. The review is probably shorter than the book report he had to write the same night on Huckleberry Finn (if his school district hasn't banned it). Of course it was probably hard to really review a game that you didn't understand, when you had to get in your obligatory Grand Theft Auto III time and do your chores and homework.

BTW from the reviewers profile on their message board here are his interests:

Interests: Flashy Lights, Techno and punk music, And both in one game REZ.

From his email: Breakfastmonkey84@hotmail.com

I would say that the reviewer is going to be 18 this year (born in 1984).

He's an admin at that site and is the sites PR Director, but has only been a registered member of that site since Jan. 29, 2002. That makes me think this is a highly professional site.

He's also known to burn games for other users on the site (from reading posts in his other threads). That would make me really confident to send my game off to GamersMark to be reviewed... (I don't think I'd like my reviewer copy to potentially be burned and sent throughout the web)

So I think our assessment of an immature kid reviewing the game is accurate here.

I guess since STB didn't have his "Flasy Lights, Techno, and Punk Music" in the game is part of the reason for the poor rating.

'I couldnt tell if it was my computer or what but there was no sound'. If you want to review games, you better get some good equipment, not questionable stuff - even if OOTP doesnt have sound.

ALSO, no one wants to hear their mouse click anyway. Thats annoying.

From one of their other board members. Coincidentally also from Oklahoma like our reviewer and joining the site the day afterwards.

quote:

I need to try it, man. I'm stuck in Age Of Empires, right now. Ah, the old ghetto war strategies. Hey, I'll burn you a copy and we can have a multi. 'Ow's that sound, eh?

The reply from the reviewer:

quote:

sounds good eh... if i could get another copy of SG you could play, its unburnable... besides the way the key works only one person can use it. i cannot even Resale it.

Why he doesn't explicitely say he does it, he's happy to go with the burned CD being made available to him, and he certainly gives the impression that if he could he'd burn the other game for the guy or see if he can get a new copy of the game.... which he was indeed the reviewer for, he adds in that he thinks the game should be Game of the Year (its your standard first person shooter).

Kind of funny he talks about reselling a game he was the reviewer for. Who knows maybe they are a site where they actually but the games to review them.. but even then if I were running the site, I'd be uncomfortable with my PR Director making comments which insinuate that he's cool with either burning CDs or trying to get another copy of a game to give to a user.. just doesn't make the site look very professional.

I hope this guy doesn't have to sit down anytime soon as he's being ripped a new one from what I can see at the website.

I agree with everyone who says the review was written by someone who was unqualified, however I don't like the tone of many of the responses (on that page) to the review. Name-calling back at the reviewer (or suggesting perhaps the reviewer should be shot) makes no sense. Show a little more maturity than the reviewer. A name-calling fight is (IMO) immature and if I'm someone who never played OOTP before, I would read some of the responses and think "What a bunch of whackos. I think I'll skip this one."

The well-reasoned responses are very good, kudos to those who posted them, and much more effective in rebutting the reviewer.

Edit: punctuation error in the second paragraph...it was bugging me.

The funny thing is look at the people who run the website:

PR Director: Electrical Tech, former Wal-Mart guy
CEO/Webmaster: Unemployed
Site Admin: Unemployed

I'd say the site reeks of just being a high school kids trying to scam free games site.
