Win Shares now available

For 16 team leagues. If you run it on a team with more than 16, I think it will run fine but only for the first 16 teams.

Just finished running this program on the first season of one of the online leagues I play in. Speed was phenomenal, completing the report in 15-20 seconds. Incredible, sublime piece of work by the creators. Thanks a million.

Looking through the WinShares report generated from the first season of the PWBL, the 1946 league I play in. White Sox won 61 games and Ed Lopat finished third among Pitchers with 25.5 WinShares. If I understand Winshares, haven't read the James book yet, he was responsible for 42% of his teams victories?

That would be a better question for Chad or someone that's read the book. I haven't got my copy yet and only read a little about it in Jame's Historical Abstract.

I believe the concept is that for each win, three winshares are allocated out. I could be wrong but your pitcher would have 25.5 out of 183 winshares.

I just picked up the book and will be diving in this week.

Anybody - feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

That's right, 3 win shares are allotted per win, so Lopat's 25.5 are of a possible 183.

Why 3 per win? James felt that was a good number to settle upon, and it worked well.

I have the book in my hand -- it's amazing how complex a calculation it is for such a simple final stat.

BTW -- I know I'm not the only one looking for this, but I'd like to see final Win Shares totals for this past MLB season. If anybody's seen them, please let us know.

Stacy,

Is it possible to for the template to do career win shares, or is that something we'll have to come up with on our own?

For something like my league, it could take a long, long time to go through those. 9,000 players + 102 seasons = ugh.

Peace
John

I plan on working on it. If the idea I have works, it should be available before the new year.

Thanks Stacy. I appreciate the quick reply.

If you want anyone to test your idea, email me (ABLCommish@aol.com) or find me on AIM (UCONNROX11). All of my HTML files are readily available, so I can fire off some seasons rather quickly.

Peace
John

Number of teams

Any word on when you'll have a version that can take up to the current MLB total of 30 teams? STUPENDOUS job, so far, though. I can't imagine it would be that difficult, to make it possible for more teams - just a matter of copying and inserting the code used for every team, correct? In fact, if someone could post how to do it I'd even be willing to try to change this myself! Also, noticted with the teams it did the calculations for, the only fielding win shares went to 2B and 3B. Not a single one going to other positions, especially surprising for SS or CF. Any thoughts on this?

Actually, although I do have plans to do it, right now it seems like a HUGE task. The hardest part will be the 1st sheet where the team totals are. We tried expanding it to 30 teams, but if you do and run less than 30 teams, some of the calculations blow up (doesn't like blank values or something). So, I'm going to have to keep track of how many teams there are, input the formulas on the 1st sheet, and find some way to automatically delete the blank lines (which I'm not sure yet how to do in a macro). It's not impossible, but I'm guessing it could take 16 hours to complete.

Haven't tried it for a league with more than 16 teams, so I'm not sure at this time what is happening, but I'll give it a try if I get time.

So, I'm guessing the OOTP limit of 40 (or is it 42?) teams is out of the question?

I wasn't sure how many teams were possible. I didn't think people would use more than 30 for the most part, but if the limit is 40 or 42, I'll try to accomodate that limit.

Keep in mind one thing, I'm still adding features. Every time I add new features, I have to keep in mind how it affects all the teams and many times make the same changes up to 16 times. I'd rather get all the features done and know that is a complete product before I try to expand to 40+ teams. Otherwise it would take me forever to add the new features each time I think them up. So I want the 16 team version to be stable and for me (and others) to run out of ideas for it before I work on expanding it.

Fair enough. And god bless you for doing this. Win Shares is the most groundbreaking stat since OPS. Just more complicated.
