The Curious Case of Ben Sheets

Just wondering what happens to Ben Sheets in your game. Am thinking about signing him, but it almost seems like it would be a cheat, since he will accept a minor league contract I think. Any insights?

In my experience he has widely varied. The one time I picked him up he had an era over 9 and didn't win a game. In the second year of my current league he just pitched a shut out for Baltimore but I'm not sure of his stats, I just recall seeing him in the headlines after a game last night. I also recall the Rangers picked him up one season and he was an absolute bust.

I have a save going that's now in the middle of 2012. Sheets signed a minor league deal with Toronto in July of 2009 but went directly to the big club and went 4-4 with a 4.13 ERA in 70 innings. 1.28 WHIP.

He was able to turn those two months worth of work into a 5-year, $30 million deal from the Royals. In 2010 he was an AL All-Star, going 12-9 with 3.19 ERA, 1.17 WHIP in 217 innings. 15-9 in 2011, ERA 4.37, 220 IP. So far in 2012 he's 6-7 with a 4.82 ERA in 90 innings. He's missed a total of two weeks playing time through three minor injuries.

BTW, injury level in my save is "Low."

He was picked up by Houston in my game. The results were not good:

1-4, 8 point something ERA

In my Jays Dynasty I signed Sheets to a minor league contrat in 2009 and he got into 5 games in late August and September when he returned from his injury. He left as a free agent after the 2009 season ans signed a 5 year $26,350,000 contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. He got off to a good start with the Rays in 2010 and was an Allstar. He finished the season with a record of 14-8 with a 4.00 ERA. In 2011 he was 13-11 with a 4.27 ERA for the Rays and would miss some time on the DL with Dead Arm Syndrome. In the 2012 he was traded by the Rays to the Los Angeles Angels for C Jeff Mathais and he was 3-1 with a 4.34 ERA before suffering an injury and requiring Tommy John Surgery. He would return from Tommy John Surgery in 2013 and was 5-10 with a 5.68 ERA with the Angels before being released in August. He was signed to a minor league contract by the Cincinatti Reds and was 1-2 with a 3.56 ERA to close out the 2013 season. He was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers at the conclusion of the 2013 season and signed a 2 year $2,435,000/year extension with the Dodgers and remains with them in 2014. In September 2014 Sheets has been converted to a middle reliever and is 2-2 with 1 SV and a 4.15 ERA in 40 games for the Dodgers.

In my Reds game mentioned in the "Playoffs that wouldn't die" thread, Sheets signed a $400,000 contract with the Brewers and went 7-0 with a Koufax-like ERA. That got them into the 3-way tie. He's a free agent now and I'm wondering if a 5 year, $36 mil deal that he's asking for is an acceptable risk.

"Joe, there were a hundred thousand people there and they were all cheering and clapping; you've never seen anything like it."

"Yes, I have," DiMaggio responded.

from my experience he wouldn't accept a minor league deal, the player card said he would but then he laughed at my offer
