Strategy First - A Warning

Mods, feel free to lock if you need to, but I think this is important.

Maybe you pre-order guys are even better off than I previously thought....

Because it appears that the Strategy First edition is not only pretty old, relatively speaking, but also not patchable. I'm getting the same elicense missing error that another guy reported.

Hoping that either someone from OOTP or SF has an easy solution to this.

In the meantime, and until someone speaks up from OOTP, I would hold off on buying this version a bit.

Totally off topic but i had this problem with games I bought off Steam that weren't valve created games. Made me very angry.

I'm hoping and assuming this isn't the case here. It is interesting to note that in the game's opening screen it says Strategy First 10.0.8, or something close to that, where the version info goes.

Of course, I can't doublecheck that because the game no longer opens after I installed the patch.

Yeah. Take a lesson from it though like I did with steam, whenever possible I buy either a hard copy of a game from a store or, such as the case of OOTP, buy it directly from the company that makes it.

Eh, the lesson I'll take will be to not buy the product again. For SF to have it, and be selling it, means that Markus or whoever does his business deals approved it. If that means selling a version that doesn't receive support without advertising it as such.....well that reflects bad on both parties.

But that is also jumping to conclusions, as I haven't gotten a response yet from either party, being it's the middle of the night.

Time will tell.

Well hopefully like has been done in the past with some other companies the patches will be made available on their site even if it's a week or two after the main release. I made sure to ask about patching before I made the purchase (wasn't an OOTP employee though), so I too would be very disappointed if there won't be any patches made available. I don't mind waiting a week or two though.

I agree, but I am will wait to comment further until all of this is addressed.

Yep, about all you can do. From what I have seen here over the years, since I bought OOTP 6, Markus has always run a good organization. I would be very surprised to get shafted here.

Actually from everything you said this has nothing to do with Markus. Based of what you've said, and I won't say this is the exact cause because I haven't seen it, Strategy First altered the registry entry which would explain why the patch doesn't work, although the fact it patched at all kind of makes me doubt this, because it shouldn't have even been able to see the OOTP was installed at all.

Patches don't work because the strategy first does not use elicense as its method of purchase verification.

Well then i'll amend myself to saying you're barking up the wrong tree because this has NOTHING to do with Markus or OOTPdev if the problem is the licensing system SF uses. This isn't a perfect example but it's the best I can come up with, it's like you buying a used car from someone who has done major modifications to the car, and then expecting the makers of the car to repair it for free simply because their name is on the front. Chances are SF just hasn't altered the patches to use the new licensing system so I'd say either give it a few days or complain to SF.... a lot. Because from the sound of it all Markus will be able to do is prod SF to do it faster than they are.

Updates for games on Steam can only be installed through Steam. You will get them automatically and when you run OOTP 9 via Steam you should automatically get your updated version when you start it.

Yes, the game which you purchase from SF is an SF version. SF does the support and patches and everything.

Please install the SF setup file again just on top of your current installation, and the game will work again.
