Historical league problem

I am trying to set up a new game where there is an active historical league, and also another smaller league - I thought I had it all set up right, but when I start the game, there are no historical players on the historical league teams - if I search for them, they show up on different, random teams (like Willie Mays on the Cubs) but they don't actually appear on the rosters. The inaugural draft option is definitely turned off, so I don't know why else this would happen?

Did you wizard the historical setup or do-it-yourself?

I set it up myself - I just added a basic historical league, then set up my own fictional league.
