Scaled TV Contracts
when a stable OOTPX comes out, I plan to re-start my World Baseball League, including a promotion and relgation system, similar to the Snglish Football Setup.
I want to make the differences between the 4 divisions noticible, but not make it impossible to get promoted and stay there. I already pla to have Division 1 teams draft first in each round of the drafts, followed by Division 2 teams etc. My one concern is on what percentage of the Division 1 TV contracts should I make those of teams in Division 2, 3 and 4. I was thinking of perhaps 80, 60 and 40% respectively. Any thoughts? |

It really depends what sort of system you want to create. For example, in the real world of English football, the Premiership's media contract is worth well in excess of GBP500MM/year. Sky's contract to show live games is worth almost that much alone, before the cost of BBC's highlights shows and the revenue made from overseas broadcasts.
The Football League, meanwhile, (i.e. the Championship to League Two) has a media contract in place for GBP88MM per season. Every league in the Football League takes an equal share. So, the Championship (say), makes about GBP30MM per season -- probably not even 5% of what the Premiership makes. If you want to recreate a system like that -- where the top league is basically a separate entity, and the remaining leagues function on roughly equal footing -- then the disparities need to be big. If you want all of your leagues to be basically just "levels" of the same entity, then what you suggested might be alright: you won't see much 'tiering' of teams (at least not for economic reasons). I don't think I quite want the differences that the English leagues have, using their league more for the promotion/relegation structure, thus why I was thinking 100/80/60/40. The English league has way too much difference between the have and have-nots.

Remember too that you're driving a lot of your revenue off of your gate revenue. Market sizes, average stadium sizes, and ticket prices are something to consider as well. With my financials I use, I have found in my 3 tier promo/relegation league that the attendance is a larger factor than the TV contracts.

I was talking purely about creating a model that would recreate the situation which exists in the English football leagues. That would require something like 100/5/5/5 (with maybe marginal adjustments due to the fact that teams from higher divisions are more likely to have lengthier cup runs & so on). I really don't know how well that would work for OOTP play, and it also doesn't seem to be what the original poster wants.

Hahahaha. It's way too hot for me to sleep at the moment. I spent the last three hours lying in my bed & thinking about OOTP (pretty much). My last essay is like 80% done. I'll be fiiiiine... I guess...

I think market sizes/Ateendance should be taken care of by the fact that the lower division teams are in non-baseball countries. I may have to adjust the figures a little there too for teams that get promoted/relegated.
