Question for the veterans

When you guys are considering a minor league player to bring up, do you base your decisions on his scouted ratings or minor league stats that year so far?

I have some guys in AAA that look like solid players stat wise, but scout-wise they're one-two star players.

Stats for the most part, although if his scouted ratings are close to my backup then that will help be a tie-breaker.

I don't play with scouts, but generally I go 75% ratings and 25% stats.

I tend to go with stats. I have found that most players don't really develop until they have experienced ML quality pitchers and batters. They may suck for the first year or two. but then they start to get up to speed.

I use a combination of stats, ratings, and experience when making my decision when to promote.

Proof is in the pudding baby, stats.Ryan Howard was kept in the minors until he was 25 because the "scouts" said he wouldn't be able to hit big league pitching, even as he continued to murder the ball in all levels of the minors.Luckily,Jim Thome got hurt in 2005 and the Phillies were forced to bring him up.I guess it worked out pretty good huh?

My issue with Ryan Howard is the WAY he hits .279 (lifetime).

I don't think that there has ever been a player, a successful player, with more strikeouts than hits.

Edit: Reggie had 13 more K's than hits. Sammin' Sammy was close.

Thome is almost a PERFECT match for Howard, right on down to the .279 average.

Still, the vast amounts of strikeouts probably stopped him from beind advanced by a full year, maybe two. I still see him with a legitimate chance to hit 500 home runs...although, in ten years, it won't mean a thing.

I generally base promotions on a combination of the minor league development report, ratings relative to other players of the same position in the organization, and the needs of the higher level club. But mostly the development report.
