NCAA Format with Historical teams
Being a big fan of the NCAA tournament and a long time OOTP player I am going to attempt my own 64 team tourney with the best 64 teams in Major League history.
I have (with the help in another topic) figured out how to set it up, but now have to come up with the top 64 teams. That might take a little time and hopeflly you guys can feed me some teams you think should make the tourney. Rankings are possible and I will break them off into 4 different regions (not necessarily by location). I would like to run this on Saturday so anyone that would like to please start sending me their favorites. I'll keep everyone posted that's interested.

Had a chance to run the 1st Tournament, plans to run it several times to see the different outcomes. 1st Champion is the 1912 Boston Red Sox.
Headed off to work, will list all 64 teams and some of the highlights from the first go around by tomorrow morning.

The 6 round single elimination tournament with 64 of the greatest teams of all time came down to the 1912 Boston Red Sox vs the New York Yankees of 1939.
Boston's Clyde Engle singled home Tris Speaker in the top of the 9th to give the Red Sox a 7-6 lead that would be good enough for the win. Boston's road to the Championship also included wins over the following teams. A 5-4 win over the 62 SF Giants on a walk off homer by Tris Speaker in the 10th. An 8-6 victory over the powerful 76 Cincinnati Reds. A 2 out single by Honus Wagner in the top of the 9th capped off a 6-5 win over the 53 Brooklyn Dodgers. Boston scored 5 in the 1st and cruised to a 6-2 victory over the 99 Arizona Diamondbacks. In a final 4 matchup the Red Sox behind a complete game by Smokey Joe Wood beat the 98 Yankees 7-3. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other tournament highlights.... Sandy Koufax (66 Dodgers) threw a complete game shutout striking out 11 and walking none, for a 5-0 win over the 86 Mets. In the very next round the 66 Dodgers pitcher Don Sutton tossed a no-hiiter against the 70 Orioles in a 4-0 win striking out 10. In round 3 Ben Oglivie (82 Brewers) hit a walk off 14th inning homer to beat the 07 Rockies 2-1. Andy Fox it a 2-run walk off blast for the 99 D-Backs to beat the 89 Oakland A's 4-2 in 13 innings. The 66 Dodgers had no luck against the 39 Yankees as the Yanks pounded out 23 hits in a 11-6 NY win in one of the Elite-8 contests. In another Elite-8 game the 67 Red Sox Dave Morehead shutout the 98 Padres 3-0. In one of the more wild games during the final 4, the 39 Yankees faced the 67 Red Sox. Joe Dimaggio hit a solo shot in the top of the 8th to give the Yankees a 4-2 lead, but Boston tied in the bottom half 4-4. New York scored 4 times in the top of the 9th, but the first 2 runners reached base for Boston in the bottom of the 9th and then 3B Joe Foy hit a 3-run shot over the green monster to make it 8-7. The rally died as Spud Chandler retired the next 3 hitters. 1B Jake Stahl of the 1912 Boston Red Sox was selected the Tournament MVP .526, 6 RBI's, 6 runs scored.

Tourney #2
I switched around the matchups, as I will for each round. Two nice matchups in round 1 as the 2005 Chicago White Sox battled the 1969 Cubs and the 45 Cubs went up against Tony LaRussa's White Sox from 1983. In the first game Mark Buehrle threw 10shutout innings and Geoff Blum singled home AJ Pierzynski in the bottom of the 10th to beat Fergie Jenkins and the 69 Cubs 1-0. The 2nd crosstown matchup had the south side Sox winning again, this time by a score of 4-3. Bill Nicholson of the 45 Cubs hit 2 home runs, the 2nd one gave the Cubs a 3-2 lead in the 9th. But the Sox scored a run to tie the score and with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 2 outs Carlton Fisk was HBP to load the bases. The next batter Miguel Dilone walked to bring in the game winner. Tourney 1 Champion the 1912 Red Sox were knocked out in the 1st round by Randy Johnson and the 99 Arizona Diamandbacks. Round 2 saw Geoff Blum as a hero again. Blum got the 2005 White Sox a win with a walk off homer in the 12th in a Sox 4-3 victory. Two players had 5-hit games in round 2, Alvin Dark (54 NY Giants) and Tony Womack (99 D-Backs). Scott Erickson (91 Twins) and Tommy Bridges (35 Tigers) eached tossed shutouts. The White Sox continue to supply excitement in round 3, this time the 83 Sox Carlton Fisk hit a walk off homer for a 3-2 Sox winner over the 68 Tigers. The 77 KC Royals and the 95 Braves put up some runs with the Royals coming out on top 11-10. George Brett gets the 77 Royals into the final 4 with a 5-4 win over the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates. Brett went 3-4 with a double and a home run. The Final 4 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates vs 1977 KC Royals 1980 Houston Astros vs 1999 Arizona Diamondbacks In a game that featured two of the hardest throwers in baseball history JR Richard's 80 Astros defeated Randy Johnson and 99 Diamandbacks 5-1. JR struck out 10 in his complete game performance. The Pirates advanced beating KC 6-5. The Championship game was a classic going 15 innings as the Tourney 2 Champion 1909 Piitsburgh Pirates defeated the 1980 Astros 7-2. George Brett was the Tournament MVP hitting .524. JR Richard had 2 CG victories, a 1.00 ERA with 19 strikeouts.

This is a really great idea. I might try something similar, but I think I would do a 3-game series for each round with no days off. That way a bit of starting pitching depth comes into play.
Also, I'm not sure how to avoid the possibility of having one player playing against himself. I laugh at some of the teams you chose for your tournament, especially ones like the 1996 Rangers. I guess if the best 64 teams were chosen, they'd be way too many Yankees teams on the list. |
