Question!!
What is the best way to play out a season? By pressing the "FINISH TODAY" button over and over, and making transactions when necessary, or playing out each game, play-by-play?

The tradeoff is often immersion (playing out each game) versus amount of time to accumulate results and statistics (simming with autoplay). The answer depends, of course, on what you want out of the game. Also, there are many ways to combine these styles of play.
For example, I want both. So, I play out each game but with short and instant PbP. I give up some immersion in each game, but my seasons move along faster. Sorry, but that's as definitive as I can be. The good news is that's an indication of the versatility of this game. The bad news is that you are going to have to answer this question yourself. |

I recommend playing out each game, until you really get used to the game.

I feel differently. I sim while looking at the schedule page and check boxscores that interest me. At least once a week I check my starting rotation, relief pitching and batting orders for trends and DTD injuries. I check out other teams stats and the league stats on a regular basis. If a significant injury occurs the game lets me know so I can make the appropriate changes. I do the same with the AAA team but not the others. Rarely I will play out a game or series of significance, especially if it is late in the season with playoff implications. I play out each of my playoff games.
I admire those who play out each game. It doesn't suit my personality.

One of my favorite things to do is this:
I start a historical simulation in 1901. I then Autoplay it for 20, 40, 60 seasons, or whatever ERA I feel like hoping in. Of course, when I hop in, the teams are not filled with the players they were filled in for that year. But, the names are all there, just mixed up. Now, I will either do 1 of 2 things. I will take a crappy team and then take over as GM and see if I can turn this team around. Or, I will release all players to the FA and draft me a team and see how I do. Usually, I will play out game by game for the team for most of the season. If things go bad, (my team sucks), then I resign and sim a few more seasons and see how the team I developed works out. They usually make the playoffs within a year or two. I then argue with the AI about if it was my fantasic drafting or his 'fixing my team'. I have deleted many a league because I was losing the argument. During the autosims, it is fun to stop it and poke around. It is like getting a Baseball Encyclopedia from an alternate universe. My favorite ERA to hop in is 1968. Pitchers ruled and you can create a pretty powerful pitching staff. I do try different draft methods, like picking 4 stud starters first, then picking the hitters, or swapping pitcher, then hitter. I also like '68 as I was 11 years old and that was my baseball as a kid years. I know the names and the stats. Just about any ERA is fun to hop in, but I don't like the 1900s to 1920s, as there just is not enough long ball. I play with no minors and I have a draft for the rookies. Which, by the way, I have the draft late in November, so that they rookies come in during their real debut seasons. One note: If you do this, you may want to change it during the league expansions, as the new team gets a high draft pick, which makes them better during their 1st season.

OP will get a good sample of the versatility that I spoke of from these posts.

My style seems to differ somewhat from others. I like to do quick play for my team each day. If the linescore has something I should look at, I take a look and can keep an eye on how my players are doing. I them use finish today for the rest of the days results. (I presently have a 1B with 356 Total Bases and it's only Aug 19 - it's fun to read linescores with players like him).

I do the same, but I read the box score for all of my team's games. |
