Questions on Ratings, Stars, etc.
Would someone mind confirming for me the connection between ratings and stars, scouting, and performance? There are so many options to choose from in the settings, I'm not sure what affects what...
I have set the league to rate players on a 40-35-20-5 scale in the manager options page. So I think that the amount of current OVR stars for each player would be based primarily on current ratings. The situation I'm seeing is that I'm bringing prospects up who are 23-24 and who have 5-star potential and after one year in the bigs, they have one star potential. I guess this is realistic, and that they flopped. But I also have noticed that most of the aces on my staff having ratings between 10-15, and go on to do incredibly well. But some of the younger prospects will have current ratings at or above 20, and do poorly. Isn't performance based on the current ratings? Thanks for the advice... |

No, you have that backwards. In a scouting environment, current ratings are partly based on current performance as well as the scout's assessment of tools and ability. Naturally, performance is loosely based on the actual ratings in the background along with a randomness factor, and current ratings are the scout's fuzzy judgment of the actual ratings, thus some players not playing up to their potential and some scouting reports being dead wrong after a year or two of close up scrutiny.

interesting... so there is some actual ratings value that I am not seeing because I have scouting enabled. And the values that I am seeing is a flawed scout's opinion based partly on the performace of the player. I actually kind of like that, sounds realistic to me.
thanks! |

Basically, you have actual ratings for everything that a player does. If you ever want to see them, go to a player profile as commissioner and look for the editor tab. Game results are mostly based on those actual ratings, and some other factors built in to reflect the uncertainty of life. If you have scouting turned off, you will see those background ratings reflected accurately in the current and potential ratings. Still, they are not a 100% guarantee of actual performance. Now with scouting turned on, the ratings are affected by the scouting quality and budget, and yet more uncertainty built in. The better the scout and the higher the scouting budget, the more reliable predictors they will be, but certainty is not guaranteed at all, of course. Just like real life. |
