The Eastern New England Baseball League

In 2008, interest in professional sports in the New England region was at an all-time high. Always a hotbed of fan fervor, with recent or current champions in 3 major sports and even a contender on the ice, fans were hungry for more. But with the plunging economy, "Joe the Plumber" had a hard time scraping up the cash to drive to Fenway or Gillette, never mind paying to park and getting tickets at the crazy prices being charged.

A group of businessmen banded together to form a league in the eastern part of the area. Spanning from Mystic CT to Bangor ME, with the heart of the league in MA and RI, the group bought or leased old municipal stadiums in towns like Canton and Foxboro, and rehabbed them for professional baseball play.

The aspiration was for the league to be able to offer its players comfortable livings, so that they could focus in the offseason on conditioning and charitable work in the community. A major stride toward this goal was made when the league was able to sign a lucrative deal with the Apple Sports Network, allowing Apple broadcast rights live direct to IPhones and for web availability as podcasts. This contract guaranteed each team in the league 1million dollars in media revenue each year. This allowed ticket prices to be set aggressively low, to court as many fans as possible.

As the playoffs close in 2012, the league is found to be in good shape. In the first five years, the Patriot League has dominated the Atlantic Cup, winning it in all five years over the Yankee League. In honor of this dominance, we will look first at the Western Division of the Patriot League.

Western Division, Patriot League 2012 Regular Season
1. Foxboro Monarchs 96-66

Foxboro has the best player in the league, 28 year old Juan Carlos Alonzo. Alonzo has never hit below .350, and in 2012 had an "off year" with an OPS of 1.213. With three other sluggers joining him with 39 or more homeruns, Foxboro's attack is potent indeed.

The Monarch's pitching is solid if unspectacular, far better than their division rivals but middle of the overall pack. Cisco Valentin, the 25 year old closer, is the premier face of the staff.

Foxboro has been to the playoffs 4 of 5 years, winning it all in 2010. However, their minor league system is ranked among the bottom 3, so the rest of the division is hopeful that a new era in the PL-West is about to dawn.

2. Cranston Cannons

3. Pawtucket Blue Sox

4. Dedham Liberty

***to be continued**
