Twins Offseason Thread

Had to be done.

• Sign Nick Punto to be backup.
• Sign Breslow
• Trade Cuddyer.
• Trade Perkins.
• Trade for 3B
• Move Casilla to SS.
• Get Hughes to compete for 2B job with Punto/Harris.

C: Mauer/Redmond
1B: Morneau
2B: Hughes/Punto/Harris
3B: ???????/Buscher
SS: Casilla
LF: Young
CF: Gomez
RF: Span
DH: Kubel/Ruiz/Buscher

Last man off: Harris/Buscher

SP: Liriano/Baker/Slowey/Blackburn/Humber
RP: Breslow/Neshek/Nathan/Crain/Mijares/??????

Sign Gardy to a longterm deal this winter too. Fire Vavra and sign a new hitting coach (will never happen...probably should).

Who's out there for FA's this year? Who's this Hughes guy you're talking about? Kubel isn't going to do at DH, we need to go out and find someone here more than any place else.

Luke Hughes. He's a young minor leaguer - probably not ready...but...who knows.

What do you have planned for Perkins? Breslow should be locked into a leage min contract for 2+ years.

I would agree in the most part with your ideas. I wouldnt be against the idea of moving Cuddyer back to third or otherwise trading him is a must. I seen in the star tribune today they talked about the possibility of signing a good hitting shortstop, they had mentioned Orlando Cabrera.

I know I wouldn't want Orlando Cabrera, he just doesn't seem like a Twin. But if he's all that's going to be out there, we might have to.

We score more runs in a season than we have since 1996 and you think we need to get rid of the hitting coach?

Here's a list of FA's I found: 2009 MLB Free Agents: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

Is Cesar Izturis any good, he might be a good SS candidate? Maybe Hank Blalock at 3B?

I want Molitor as a hitting coach. I've wanted Molitor since he retired.

I'll pass on Izturis, Blalock and Cabrera. I'd stick with internal options than sign those guys.

Offseason Outlook: Minnesota Twins: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

Quote:
Shortstop is another need, and the Twins may be targeting free agent Orlando Cabrera. As I've said, I'd rather see them go for broke and sign Rafael Furcal. More likely, they will just bring Nick Punto back. But imagine Furcal and Beltre in '09 instead of Buscher, Mike Lamb, Harris, Punto, and Adam Everett on the left side of the infield. It'd be a huge improvement, but the Twins would have to be able to handle paying $25MM for their combined salary.
Furcal/Beltre would be interesting. But I'd prefer not to tie all that money up in two guys when we have so many coming to their Arb years. But that'd get me excited.

Casey Blake...hmmmmmmmm. Looks like we're trying to sign this guy. I 'member him very well from when he was with the Twins and how he constantly destroys the Twins. But the guy is 36...I'd rather have several other sem-available 3B.

I'm surprised this hadn't been mentioned yet.

Neshek to undergo Tommy John surgery

Of course, knowing the Twins, they'll just randomly pick a guy from their farm system who will put up a 2.43 ERA in 78 innings.

He crushes left handed pitching. I am speculating that is their main interest in him.

Haha,

I think they may have a couple of suitable replacements that pitched well towards the end of last year. I'm more worried about their veterans in the pen regaining some form. This is bad news however as Neshek seemed to always get the big outs which they severely lacked last year.

I think it's pretty amazing that we had the #2, and #4 overall finishers for MVP and yet we didn't make the playoffs. We need to get talent around these two fast while they are both still so amazing.

No Blake for us. He's going to the Dodgers because we wouldn't offer a 3rd year.

He's 34 and he really isn't that great. I don't see why a 3 year deal would be a wise idea anyway.

Signed Nick Punto to a 2 year, 8.5 million dollar deal. 3rd year option for 5 mil. or a 500K buyout. Gardy has already said he will be the starting SS, so now the priorities shift to 3B and RP.

No. He may be the worst SS in the history of everything.

But seriously-4 mil a year for Nick Punto?

I can't wait for the St Paul Saints to sign Barry Bonds.
