Question How to reinstall OOTP4

Over Thanksgiving I will be purging my harddrive and reinstalling everything. Before I do this, I want to make sure I know how to reinstall OOTP4 and not have to worry about losing anything nor have to mess with my e-license. I'm assuming backing up everything to a CD is the first step. Will that also work regarding the e-license, or am I better served to reinstall and then contacting Via Tech regarding the license.

Thanks,

JL

Before purging the harddrive you need to first save a copy of the receipt.txt file to a disk or CD. This receipt has your Order ID which is vital.

Then... go to the Control Panel find the eliscence control and Unliscence the game. This prevents you from losing the liscence.

Then do your thing with the machine.

When you are ready reinstall the game. When the Eliscence screen comes up; select Liscence Game and type in your Order ID.

Voila you should be ready to roll... and because you unliscenced ahead of time, you won't lose any liscences, thus avoiding having to deal with Via Tech.

Hope this helps.

Unhappy

Scott:

Thanks for the help.

Everything went smoothly... except for when after I successfully retrieved the license.

When the game started, I got the load-up screen and then the following error message:

Runtime error
Program: C:\program files\ootp4\ootp4.exe
abnormal program termination

I'm running a PIII 600 with Windows 2000. I have a 15g hardrive and 750 of Ram.

Thanks,

JL

Sounds like a required file in the OOTP directory was missing..

Can you list the contents of the OOTP4 directory?

Since you removed everything have you reinstalled and or update Direct X and your video drivers?

I'm using Direct X 7 and the current video driver. I could upgrade to Direct X 8, but I've heard conflicting comments about it having issues with W2000. Would using 7 instead of 8 cause the problem?

Also, the programs are listed without suffixes, so could that be the issue? There are no .dat suffixes and such when I go over them.

Thanks for the suggestions, but so far no change. It still errors out.

I updated all my drivers just to be safe. Even reinstalled over the top. I'm also running Direct X 8.1, the latest I could find. I dl'd the 4.2a patch and installed that, but also no change

Any other ideas?

I'm starting to getting withdrawal symptoms...

Groundblizzard - have you used any portions of your backed-up-onto-CD OOTP files? If yes you will need to take write-protect off those files - the error you describe could come from this.

Killebrew:

That worked! I should have figured that's what it was since I had to do the same with some other files for a completely different program. Thanks for the help.
