rule 5 draft question

I'm managing the Brewers and signed free agent Tom Hughes to a 6 year deal and 2 days later he was taken in the rule 5 draft.

So I'm wondering if this is how it's supposed to work? He wasn't on my 40-man roster yet, but I thought I had 10 days to do that. Is that not the case?

I would imagine its because you didn't have him on your 40-man. I've had guys taken off my 60-day DL.

It's always good to sort the Rule 5 draft by potential and see if any of your players are there by mistake.

I just turn Rule 5 off. It is mainly an annoyance.

I find the draft extraneous to adding to my roster, but I find it increases the difficulty level by preventing me from stockpiling prospects and keeping them in my minors.

I guess I've relied on an email coming in, telling me it's time to make a choice and put someone on the active roster after the 10 day limit is up. I didn't know the rule 5 draft was only 2 days later and I didn't realize that they could just come and draft someone I'd just signed. Is this really legal? If so, I sure wish there was some kind of warning ahead of time.

I lost a guy to the Rule 5 draft in my league because I forgot to put him on the 40-man... he's a young kid who's now second in the league in ERA. D'oh!
