OOTP9 Names Clarification

Scenario - I create a league play a few seasons and do not like the names that are generated so I spend 20 hours of editing the names.txt and first names.txt files to include new census data, remove idiotic names and change frequencies.

Question - Does these newly edited file from the database folder get used by my pre-existing league? I ask because there is names.dat file created in the saved game/league folder at the time of the league creation.

So now is this file (and not my edited ones) being used each year? If so, what is the best way of using my new names.txt and first names.txt files in an existing league?

Thank you.

You have to use the Re-Import Names and Ethnicities feature in Global Setup. Be thankful, by the way, that they just fixed it in a recent patch. I know I am, because that is the only way that you can change those .dat files after they have been created. Make sure the edited text files are in place in the database folder, obviously, before you re-import.

Does it actually save the new names/weather after you reimport now?

Yes it does.

And you can thank Tony M for that. He made sure that it finally worked.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

Actually, we can also thank you for bringing it up in that thread of yours. It had been going on for quite a while and you were the one who pointed out that the "fix" had the effect of re-importing being applicable only for the current session of OOTP. I don't think that was realized by anybody up until then.

Sure, I brought it up, but Tony M beta tested it and shephered the fix through. If he hadn't been listening and taken the time to look into things then it would still be broken. My role was trivial.

Well, thank you both because I sure had a good use for that feature recently, without which my current league would have been significantly compromised.

It's an important feature. I'm glad it was fixed too.

No, that's a very good point. It made me add to my list, save and reload a league to test any fix. I'd gone through a 200 year sim to make sure no names that shouldn't be there got through and it worked. Didn't dawn on me that it might not have saved given that the screen says 'saving nnnnn' as you exit.

We had to badger Markus to remove the 'safety limit' on the number of names per nameset because it never worked with just one name per nameset due to this limit, and Markus finally admitted it existed and then to his credit, removed it with the next build.

Tony, you deserve even more credit for this than I thought. Thanks again.
