BZ 1743: Draft and release issue
I'm experiencing an issue where the two Winter Leagues in my fictional universe are instantly releasing all the players they just drafted the day before. This happens like clockwork every year when their amateur draft rolls around. The problem is the same as the one described in this thread.
These aren't all scrub players that are being released; the top draft picks are major prospects who are immediately gobbled up by teams in the universe's primary league. Obviously this upsets the balance of power; it's like a second "free for all" draft for the main league. I've tried setting rosters to unlimited as well as placing a limit of 40; no effect. AI evaluation settings are at 55 ratings, 38 current, 5 previous, 2 two years ago. Neither WL has a minor league attached to it. The problem does not affect my main league (4 levels of minors), the Japanese league (1 minor league level) or the Mexican league (no minors). Here are a couple pictures illustrating what I'm seeing (the 2nd picture is the ratings of one of the dropped draftees; they're easily better than anybody currently in the organization). Notice that it's not just draftees being signed and released; it's happening for free agents as well (my 1st picture seems to have cut off that J. Rivas gets released the day after signing his "minor league contract" - a weird situation since there is no minor league attched to this league). ![]() One thing I noticed is that, for both the affected leagues, the draft isn't showing up properly in the "League Events" tab: ![]() Notice that it says the 2060 draft is to be held March 7, 2061. Also notice that there's no draft listed as having taken place on March 7, 2060. Finally, in the first picture above you'll notice that the players are listed as being taken in the "2059 draft" (even though the draft is being held in 2060. Any ideas why this might be happening?

What year did you start the game in?
If it was before 2059 have you seen this problem before? Technically speaking it is correct in its description in that the draft for the season that starts in 2060 is the 2060 draft even if it takes place in 2061. I'm wondering if the game is noting down that the player was drafted in 2060 and then sees that he hasn't played in 2060 or indeed in 2061 and decides to release him. If you have the draft at the end of the year does the problem still happen (ie October time)

The problem has been indeed been occuring for years before 2059; in fact it started as soon as I covereted the league over to OOTP 9 (before the 2008 season).
I tested your suggestion of moving the draft to October. Good news/bad news. The good news: Yes, that does seem to prevent the AI from immediately releasing the players. The bad news: most of them are released upon the conclusion of the season (despite being clearly superior to other options on the team's roster). And it's not just draftees; all kinds of players are being signed and released. In one example, a particularly unloved player was signed and released 58 times over the course of an off-season before eventually catching on with a team in the universe's primrary league. This player was rated the #20 prospect in the Winter League by OSA before being cut and bouncing around. Those draftees who are being kept, the AI refuses to play them. The #1 pick from a draft 3 years ago has yet to get into a single game despite having better actual ratings than almost anyone on the team. He's currently rated as the #12 prospect in the league by OSA. The off-season in these two winter leagues has devloved into a non-stop cycle of sign and release. The transaction logs are filled to the brim with the daily moves. But the problem is only affecting the two winter leagues; the other leagues in the universe aren't exhibiting any of this behavior.

Sorry for the bump but I'm still experiencing this problem and haven't been able to find a remedy. I can provide .dat files if needed.

In my newly formed OOTP9 online league, we just finished our 2008 first-year player draft. The same thing that you describe happened to three players in the draft - they were drafted, then immediately released by their organizations after the draft's conclusions. These are human-operated teams - the AI is making no roster changes, but the players got released anyway!
Interestingly enough, it only happened to three players - all picked at almost the same spot in the draft. The released players were the 10th, 12th, and 13th picks of the second round. No other players were released. But there's more! We had been conducting the draft on our forums while simming the offseason week by week in the game. So when we arrived in-game at March 1st for the draft, we were already into the second round on the forums - up to Pick #10 in the second round! I put up a new file for our league to look at and set draft lists. The next day I went to sim the draft to completion. We had gotten a few more picks done on the forums in this 24 hour period, so I hand-entered those additional picks, imported the teams, and simmed the draft to completion. So what does this all mean? Well, the three picks that got released in our league were three of the five picks that I hand-entered between the initial upload of the draft-day file and simming the rest of the draft. This cannot be a coincidence, can it? To make it a little clearer, here's a simple rundown of what happened: We're simming the off-season week by week, and running the draft on our forums simultaneously to save time. When we arrive at the in-game draft date, we've picked up to pick #10 in the 2nd round. I enter the picks and put up a file. The next day, we've made five more picks on the forums. It comes time to run the sim, so I enter the five picks, import the teams, and sim the rest of the draft. The whole draft is fine except that three of the additional five picks that I hand-entered get released by their teams, all of whom had human managers. So I don't know what's causing it, but you're not alone and it certainly is not a player evaluation/AI problem because it's happening in my online league as well. |

I've uploaded an archive of .dat files (Corsairs.zip) to your server. There's a note included describing the problem in detail. Hope it helps!

Couple things to report that may or may not affect this situation:

This is now marked as something that works properly for the developers, meaning that they can't reproduce it even with your files.
Corsairs, was this an on-line league? If so, I'll merge it with BZ 1884. |

Not exactly. The league is my online one, yes, but the problem is being experienced in a version of the league that was imported into OOTP 9 for testing purposes. The testing has been conducted exclusively with all teams set to AI control. I've run about 100 sims of various lengths (trying to get financial settings right as we head to the new platform) and in every one this problem exists in the LBDI league (and only the LBDI; the other AI leagues operate normally).

I'm not sure what to suggest, then, given that Markus can't reproduce it using your files.

Is he looking at the right league? The problem only appears in the Liga Dominicana de Béisbol Invernal. All the other leagues work just fine.

You have no idea how happy you just made me. I hear a lot of complaints about this and that, not enough about the numerous victories like this. You've come through for our league more than once now and, believe me, it's noted and appreciated. Cheers, Markus.
