European Baseball League

European Baseball League To Begin

December 7th 1980
- With football crowds across the continent down due in no small part to a hooligan element, a number of enterprising businessmen have struck a deal to bank roll a new Europe-wide professional baseball league involving only European players.

Twenty-four franchises have been established in twenty-two countries (with Germany and Spain having two teams each) and the first season is due to kick off on April 1st next year.

Following the example of the American Major League, each franchise has also been assigned a number of feeder teams based in leagues in the larger European countries, which will allow younger players the chance to develop and also hopefully encourage grass-roots development of the sport. The league will also adapt the rules regarding free-agency and player movement from MLB and will use US Dollars as the currency of the league (The Euro doesn't exist yet, anyway).

The franchises will hold an inaugural draft to distribute the available players, with each team limited to the number of none home grown players they can have in their active roster at any one time. They will then do battle over a 162 game season with inaugural champions due to be crowned in October.

It promises to be an exciting time ahead for baseball fans in Europe.

Stats and Facts:
  • League Structure -
    • European League (EBL) - 2 leagues, 2 divisions of 6 teams each
    • British League (BBL, AAA) - 2 leagues, 2 divisions of 6 teams each
    • German League (GBL, AA) - 2 divisions of 6 teams each
    • French League (FBL, AA) - 2 divisions of 6 teams each
    • Spanish League (SBL, A) - 2 divisions of 6 teams each
    • Italian League (IBL, A) - 2 divisions of 6 teams each
    • European Rookie League (ERBL, R) - 2 leagues, 2 divisions of 6 teams each
  • Limit of 7 foreign pitchers and 10 foreign hitters per EBL squad. No limits on minor league teams.
  • No Designated Hitter in any league.

Franchises:

WL North Sea Division (L to R) - Amsterdam Selects, Brussels Hitmen, Glasgow Stallions, London Crocs, Dublin Wolfpack, Paris Cyclones.

WL Meditteranean Division (L to R) - Zurich Jesters, Lisbon Renegades, Milan Mud Cats, Madrid Hawks, Vienna Armageddon, Barcelona Iguanas.

EL Baltic Division (L to R) - Berlin Dragons, Stockholm Lumberjacks, Copenhagen Armada, Hamburg Heat, Helsinki Diesel, Oslo Metros.

EL Black Sea Division (L to R) - Athens Avalanche, Budapest Smoke, Moscow Blue Sox, Prague Eliminators, Warsaw Wild, Sofia Sting.

Barcelona 29 46 19 Prague 31 44 13
Notes -

Lisbon won 13 of their first 14 games.
Copenhagen started 7-3, then won only 3 of their next 18.
Prague set the league record at 21 runs in a game on 24th April against Moscow, Athens broke the record a week later with a 25-9 win against Copenhagen.
Barcelona started 10-24 and fired their manager and GM in early May.
Budapest played two 17 inning games and one 19 inning game in May.
Madrid were in contention, then finished May on a 3-15 run.
Helsinki won 19 of 21 at the end of May-start of June.
Current runs before All-Star break: Zurich 5-18, Prague 4-14, Vienna 14-4.

Player Notes -

LF Theo Brittain (Brussels) carried a .600 batting average into the second half of April. Unsurprisingly he was named as WL Batter of the Month, finishing at .464, with 7 homers, 26 RBIs and a ridiculously paltry 1 strikeout.
Javier Ramirez (Athens) threw the league's first ever no-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Berlin Dragons on 22nd April. It was his first ever win, raising his record to 1-4.
LF Aristo Fotiadis (Sofia) won the April EL Batter of the Month award with a .303/11/38 stat line. The pitching awards went to - WL: Gerd Buchert (London), 4-0/1.38 - EL: Bart Taft (Oslo), 4-1/2.75.
1B Athan Paniotis (Budapest) got himself traded away from Athens after less than a month of the season, but a week later he went 6 for 6 against the Stockholm Lumberjacks.
Austrian SP Helmuth Siepel (Athens) tosses the league's second ever no-hitter on 12th May against Prague, winning 3-0 and striking out 18 in the process.
SS Pacu Todorovic (Barcelona) hits the EBL's first ever cycle in a 14 inning game against Brussels on 16th May.
#1 overall draft pick Malcolm Kennedy (Paris) was named the WL's pitcher of the month for May, with a 5-0 record and a 2.34 ERA. The Eastern League's winner was Robert Wood (Stockholm), who went 6-1 with a 1.76 ERA.
The monthly batting awards went to the same teams as April's, but to different players. Brussels RF Aras Tansel went .418 with 5 homers and 33 RBIs. Sofia 1B Francis Gautier was .436 for the month with 6 blasts and 35 RBIs.
LF Jose Roman (Vienna) gets the EBL's second cycle on 3rd June. Again an extra inning game, with Roman's 3-run homer winning it for the Armageddon in the 11th against Amsterdam.
Swiss RF Jorg Theusen (Barcelona) has the league's first ever 3 home run game on 14th June. He had 7 RBI in a 11-7 win over Amsterdam.
LF Eskil 'Mr Reliable' Junge (London) hits for the cycle on 18th June against Lisbon in a 12 inning game. A day later he is 3/3 for with 2 home runs, but the Crocs still manage to lose both games to the Renegades.

Significant Injuries -

Zurich's first round pick 1B Lukas Stoger missed 6 weeks from early May until the All-Star break.
Glasgow's closer Clement Mounier will miss the rest of the season with a herniated disc. Before his injury on June 19th he had 24 saves in 25 opportunities and an ERA of 1.91.

Barcelona 66 96 30 Prague 75 87 16
Notes -

The EL playoff teams were pretty much set early on, but the one thing that remained in doubt was the destination of the Black Sea Division title. Sofia caught Athens in the middle of August and clinched the division with a last day win, whilst the Avalanche were losing to Warsaw.
Amsterdam pulled level with Glasgow in late July, but faded away and missed out on the playoffs with a last day loss to Milan.
Stockholm won only 3 of their first 20 after the All-Star break. On the other hand Warsaw started 24-7 after the break.
The Paris Cyclones fired their manager on the back of a 7 game losing streak, which made their record 47-58. Having the #1 overall pick obviously didn't help them.
Vienna and Madrid played a 19 inning game that was tied at 0 after 18. Madrid won 2-1.

Player Notes -

June's players of the month were -
WL Batter - Eskil Junge (London), .461/8/20
EL Batter - Aristo Fotiadis (Sofia), .359/7/28
WL Pitcher - Nike Rousakis (Milan), 5-0/1.24
EL Pitcher - Helmuth Siepel (Athens), 4-0/1.47
Fotiadis repeated his award in August. Siepel repeated his in July.
Zurich CF Benito Squillari (1st July) and Vienna 1B Lorenzo Gutierrez (31st July) both had 3 HR games.
Hampus Assar
(Madrid) throws the EBL's third no-hitter against Glasgow on 10th July. He also won the EL Pitcher of the month for August.
Constantino Deodato (Glasgow) homers and doubles in the bottom of the 9th inning as the Stallions score 7 runs to beat Dublin 14-13 on 11th July.
The undefeated streak from the start of the season of Gerd Buchert (London) finally finishes at 20 starts, with a 5-3 loss to Glasgow on 17th July. His record after the loss was 13-1 with a 2.11 ERA. He is still good enough in the rest of July to be named the WL's premier pitcher for the month.
July's hitters of the month are - WL: Lukas Stoger (Zurich), EL: Jamel Baud (Helsinki).
Aleksandr Palubicki (Milan) hits the league's first ever cycle in a 9 inning game in a 13-4 win over London on 2nd August.
Vienna's Jose Roman (WL Batter) and Moscow's Steve Moynan (EL Pitcher) are award winners for August.

Significant Injuries -

Athens LF Vadim Ivanenkov (.367, 13 HR, 53 RBI) fractured his cheek on 21st July and missed the rest of the season.
Lisbon lost two key players in August. SP Dragoljub Boskovic (11-5, 3.87 ERA) ruptured a disc whilst pitching and missed the rest of the season. SS Wilmar Dietzsch (.331, 9 HR, 57 RBI) damaged his MCL and is likely out for the best part of a year.
Sofia 3B Ianos Spurk (.308, 19 HR, 71 RBI) will miss the playoffs after rupturing his achilles on 6th September. Also missing the playoffs for them will be SS Timo Gereke, who they got in an early season trade from Hamburg and who hit over .300. Their star LF Aristo Fotiadis missed the last 2 weeks of the regular season, but should be ready for the playoffs. He had a chance to reach 50 HRs, but had to settle for 45.
London LF Eskil Junge (.316, 27 HR, 83 RBI) could be out until the middle of next season after fracturing his skull. The Crocs will certainly miss him in the playoffs.
36 year-old Vienna SP Magnus Leeuwenburgh (18-7, 3.18 ERA) might be out of baseball after herniating a disc. He will certainly be out for all of next season.

1982 Preview

March 15th 1982 - With no players yet eligible for free-agency or the Rule 5 Draft, most teams will have a similar line-up to that which they trotted out in 1981.

There may be a few clubs who have made trades, but no real stars have swapped sides, and no teams appear to be much stronger than they were last year.

The only really significant personnel changes will be due to injuries. Last year's champion, Vienna, might be one of those hurt most as they will be missing their best pitcher from 1981. If they manage to repeat, they will definitely deserve it.

Given the success of the league in it's first season, it was no surprise that a number of young men left their country's education system and started shopping themselves around to EBL teams in hopes of a contract. A few were successful, notably Brussels signed a good young 2B called Anotolio Jovine, but pretty soon the league office decided they couldn't accept this kind of thing, so have now instituted an amateur draft which will take place in June of each season. Any player hoping to play in the EBL will have to report for the draft and make themselves available to all teams.

Milan scored 136 runs in their first 17 games. 35 more than any other team.
Copenhagen and Brussels had 12 and 11 game win streaks respectively in early May.
Zurich beat London 2-1 in a 20 inning game. A new EBL record for length of game.
London fired their manager in the middle of a 14 game losing streak. Their record at the time was 17-24. Oslo also got rid of their skipper whilst they were on a 1-11 run and were 18-30 overall.
Current runs at All-Star break: Prague 24-7, Brussels 12-1.
Five of last years' playoff teams are below .500. The common theme appears to be poorer pitching this season.

Player Notes -

April's players of the Month:

WL Batter - Aras Tansel (Brussels), .490/7/30
EL Batter - Adrien Guilbaud (Stockholm), .340/6/24
WL Pitcher - Nenad Jevtic (Milan), 5-0/2.90
EL Pitcher - Kaspar Ahlmann (Berlin), 5-2/1.95

Jevtic was also the unbeaten in May and was Pitcher of the Month. He has been beaten twice so far in June.
Paris RF Jovica Sesely and Berlin C Andrew Tsogas hit for the cycle in the same week in May.
Hitters of the Month for May were Ryan Reive (Vienna, WL) and Ratko Stanovcic (Moscow, EL). The EL's best pitcher was Copenhagen's Jakob Kjeldsen.
Evzen Bartos (Glasgow) pitched a no-hitter against London on 5th June, facing only 28 batters. He hit two batters, negating any chance for a perfect game.

Significant Injuries -

Lisbon SS Noel Connolly is out for the season. At 39 years-old, he might also be done for his career. In 1982 before his injury he was hitting .354 and had a .948 OPS. Renegades CF Edelberto Ares is also out for the year with a rib cage injury. He was .309 with 6 HR and 20 RBI in the two months before he had to be shut down.
Milan's Matthieu D'Urso, who leads the league in homers at the All-Star break with 18, has been out for 2 weeks and is likely out for 2 more.
Ryan Reive (Vienna), who was hitter of the month for May is out for the rest of the season after dislocating his shoulder on 14th June.

On August 4th there were a total of 22 runs scored in the 6 EL games.
Amsterdam caught Brussels at the end of August but couldn't overtake them. In early September the top 5 teams in the Baltic division were separated by just 2 games, but Berlin won 13 of 17 to take control of the division.
Budapest beat Stockholm on the final day of the season to clinch their division and to also allow Prague into the playoffs despite a 2-0 loss to Hamburg.

Player Notes -

There were 12 different monthly award winners over the second half of the season. The hitters were - Constantino Deodato (Glasgow), Lukas Stoger (Zurich), Max Sabin (Milan), Nicodemo 'Pop' Annoni (Athens), Dolf Pellenaars (Hamburg) and Vilfred Krak (Berlin). The pitchers were - Jonas Poderbrady (Barcelona), Nike Rousakis (Milan), Stuart Seaward (Dublin), Bart Taft (Oslo), Robert Wood (Stockholm) and Adrian Sandrakos (Budapest).
Zurich starter Zihni Gurcan had the worst start in league history against Amsterdam on 8th July. He faced 9 batters, not retiring any of them, allowing 3 hits and 6 walks, with all 9 going on to score as Amsterdam score 10 runs in the 1st inning of a 17-6 win.
Brussels allowed two 3 HR games in the space of a week. Niall McKee (Dublin) on 29th July and Jani Peltola (Glasgow) were the successful hitters.
Prague RF Kyle MacKillop hit a 2 out walk off Grand Slam in the 15th inning against Moscow on 11th August.

Significant Injuries-

Max Beuchlan (Budapest) missed 6 weeks with a rib injury. He was hitting .343 with a .921 OPS at the time.
Milan pitcher Nenad Jevtic will miss a year with a torn rotator cuff. The WL's pitcher of the month for April and May suffered the injury on 23rd August, when his record stood at 17-4 with a 2.83 ERA.

Congratulation on a very well done story.
Could I ask you what you did to obtain a distribution of European players in the various roster. I mean it looks like all the teams are composed only by European players. How did you do that ? Also, about the main league EBL, that is clearly a multinationla league. Which nationality did you give t o this league while you were creating the game ?
I'm asking because I would like to create a similar league.
Thank you

Congratulation for your beautiful story, I am following it with interest. I would like to ask you how did you obtain a disptibution of European player across your teams. The Major League EBL seems to be composed only by European Players. What is the nationality (in terms of league setup) of the EBL, how did you obtain to have only European players of the various nations in your game ?
I would be interested to create a similar league to yours for my game, that's why I amasking you. I particularly like the concept of the Mixed Major league and the national minor leagues.

Hi

Thanks for your comments. I hope this helps you set up your league.
  • The 'League Nation' for the EBL is Germany. I think this is arbitrary given the following settings. I set it to Germany because they had two teams in my league and there is a well known stereotype that the Germans are excellent organisers.
  • It is important to assign the nations for each individual team. So under the 'Names & Affiliations' tab on the League Setup, make sure the little flag corresponds with the team.
  • Under the 'Rules' tab set 'Foreign Players Limit' to anything other than 'No Limit' and the 'Base Limit On' to 'Team Nationality'. You can also set the 'Foreign Pitcher Limit' and 'Foreign Hitter Limit'. I have set my foreign player limit to 10. It can be anything from 0 to 10. The pitcher limit and hitter limit don't work how you might think they do. If you set both to 10, then the teams will be allowed 20 foreign players (10 pitchers PLUS 10 hitters). I have mine set to 7 pitchers and 10 hitters, meaning my teams have to have 8 national players on their active roster. I haven't set any limits on my minor leagues, as I'm not sure it would work and even if it did, it probably wouldn't be fair to the EBL teams from nations that don't have a minor league, e.g. Russia, Sweden.
  • Under 'Options' set the foreigner percentage to 0. I think it's probably a good idea to do this for all minor leagues as well.
  • Under 'Global Setup - Player & Picture Options', untick 'Create and maintain hidden players' as if you don't the game creates foreign free agents outside the nationalities of the teams.
Depending on where you base your league you might have to fiddle with the names.txt and nationalities.txt to get accurate(ish) names. For example, I had to create a Hungarian name set as the default for Hungarians is to have Finnish names. If you need help with this, search Mod forum or ask a new question on it.
