Moving to OOTP9

I have a longtime solo fictional league using OOTP7. I've pre-ordered OOTP9...my question - when during my fictional season should I upgrade ? Off-season ? Does it really matter ? I've never carried a league from version to version. Thanks !

The general rule has always been 1) backup your league first and 2) convert to the new version during the offseason. I believe in 2006/2007/8, the magic date is January 1st, but I could be wrong on that.
