Contract Incentives

So, we're having a pretty good discussion in the GUBA right now about guys being offered outlandish incentives and/or unreachable figures for IP or PAs to get cheaper yearly contracts.

What we're (I think) settling on is something like this:

Maximum of 50% of that year's contract value can be added on as a monetary bonus, up to $2.5M

Maximum of 625 PAs to reach hitters incentive

Maximum of 250 IP for a starting pitcher incentive

Maximum of 100 IP for a reliever incentive (we have a lot of relievers get 110-120 IP using Skydog's settings)

Does anybody else have something like this in place?

Please ask this question next week. I may have better answers based on OOTP 9 data at that point.

Recently the OBL banned any and all award/performance contract incentives completely after a ridiculous offer was accepted. We also banned contracts over six years in length after two 10 year deals were accepted by the AI for the same team. That's playing the system, not the game. I dislike making outside of OOTP rules as a Commish, but sometimes I need to.

PEBA employs a limit on bonuses: they must be no more than 50% of the contract's highest yearly salary. Contracts containing a > 20% year-to-year increase/drop in salary are also subject to review (usually these are fine - it's only in extremely egregious cases where this comes into play). Our final contract restriction is worded thusly:
  • Any contract extension signed by a player under the age of 30 which buys out 4 or more free agency years must have an average yearly salary at least equivalent to the league average salary.
That's to handle the kind of issue that Kelric mentioned. We also had an issue with an owner who was offering ludicrous 10-year contract extensions at ridiculously low salaries. Using this restriction, owners still have the option to offer ultra-long-term deals but will have to think hard about whether they want to make the serious base financial commitment required. This only covers extensions; once they're on the open market, they're free game for everyone and this rule is out of play.

Interesting... color me intrigued. Could this mean that we'll be seeing some improvements in OOTP 9's AI handling of contract offers? That'd be welcome news indeed.

Another question just came up:

If you offer an incentive to a relief pitcher, does it kick in if he wins the reliever of the year award? In the game it just says "bonus for pitcher award" or whatever the exact verbage is, but it's not clear.

In short, if I offer a guy a contract with a $2M bonus for winning the award and he's selected Reliever Of The Year in-game, does the bonus kick in?

The game doesn't know what Reliever of the Year is. There's the 'pitcher award' which is basically the Cy Young - it COULD go to a reliever, but it doesn't happen often. Then there is the Custom Award, which you could name Left-Handed Throwing Catcher Of The Year Award if you wanted to and give to a right-handed utility infielder without the game knowing anything about it. The bonus will only kick in if he wins the basic pitcher award.

Roger that. Didn't have game access, but I see it now.

Thanks.

I'd advise against that with OOTP 9.

That either means the award means something, or we actually get left-handed throwing catchers. Because if we do, I want one!

The apostasy that is left handed throwing C (and 2B, 3B, and SS) in OOTP has been banished.

At least I think so the last time I tested it.
