Homer happy Tigers win opener 5-3.
Gary Sheffield led the game with a homerun to open Detroit's season. Cliff Floyd found paydirt in the 4th inning with one on base as well as Carlos Guillen in the 8th inning also with one on. Opening day starter Justin Verlander pitched 6 and 1/3 inning allowing 1 run on 6 hits and fanning 7 Kansas City batters earning his first win of the season. No mercy for Royals; Tigers win 14-1 Jeremy Bonderman showed off his repertoire to the Royals in the complete game win needing only 107 pitches to do so. Bonderman's opponents tallied 5 hits and 2 walks, and could not figure the young right hander out. Again Sheffield led off the 1st inning with a homerun. Cliff Floyd added another dinger as well as Placido Polanco. The Tigers leave town against their better judgement to start a 4-game set against the Rangers in Texas. Projected pitching matchups Game 1: Nate Robertson vs. Brandon McCarthy Game 2: Dontrelle Willis vs. Vicente Padilla Game 3: Kenny Rogers vs. Kevin Millwood (1-0) Game 4: Justin Verlander (1-0) vs. Kason Gabbard (0-1)

Tigers continue to roar; win 11-2
Detroit slugger Gary Sheffield waited until the 2nd frame to collect his 3rd homerun of the season in as many games and finished 2 for 4 with 3 runs batted in. Curtis Granderson scored 2 and drove in 3, leading Detroit batters with 7 total bases. Late inning heroics help Tigers to 6-5 victory. Pinch-hitting for Gary Sheffield in the 11th inning, Jacque Jones homer with Carlos Guillen on 2nd base to propel the Tigers over the Rangers. Big inning helps Tigers win; 7-3 The Tigers scored 5 times in the 7th inning in a team effort leading to their 5th win of the season Magglio Ordonez led Detroit batters driving in 3 runs on 3 hits. Justin Verlander struck out 8 batters over 7.1 innings and earned his 2nd win of the season. Rangers win slugfest 15-10 The Texas Rangers scored 15 runs on the Tigers to avoid the sweep. Travis Metcalf got on the board in the 8th with a grand slam homerun to help his club.
