OOTP 9 - sound
I don't know why I'm excited about this feature - but I like it - I wonder if it will be improved from ootp 6
the email mentioned that there will be a playoff crowd - that should be fun. |

I know why I am excited about sound - I loved it!!!! The biggest problem with it was that it was fatal to your league database (yes, I lost everything - after 100s of hours of play). I have eagerly been waiting since 6.5 for its return. Markus even stated in a post recently that it made a huge difference in the game experience. For me, this will be the highlight of the new release. I understand that it's not for everybody - but it definitely is for me.

Yeah, I'm one of the people who have absolutely no use for sound and wasn't exactly enthused about the development gang spending time on it - but, since it's there, I really hope it'll be good and that it will please those for who it matter greatly. With that I hope they can focus on real issues like the pitching model

We can all be encouraged that OOTP makes many improvements every year - and reads what appears in the forums. Most companies don't do that. We are all very lucky that Markus runs OOTP like he does when so many companies don't.With each new release, there is nearly always something to be appreciated for everyone. I, for one, am grateful.

Yeah, I like the option for sound. Makes the game a little better, for me anyway. I have played PureSim a little recently, and I like the sound it has, and imagine OOTP 9 will be close to the same, maybe even better from what Markus has described.
The only other thing I kind of liked from PureSim was that it showed the ball flight when playing out games. It's kind of exciting watching those high, longballs approaching the wall and wondering if it will go out. Maybe OOTP 10 will have that. Other than that, OOTP is far better than PureSim in every way IMO. Can't wait for version 9 to be released and finally start my "masterpiece" league that I will continue with till I die. ( I just hope I get one or two years in at least first.)

Being someone who manages every game, I love the idea of sound being in the game. One thing I liked about PureSim was sound. Crowd cheering, Hot dog guy selling his wares, crack of the bat, etc. I know it is not a big deal for most and I know it killed the game before but for us in game guys, it is pretty cool. I mean, the game already had a day version and a night version of the park to add some realism for the people who manage every game. Sound was the one component I wanted. I can't for OOTP9 to come out!

I have to say that I was with LLN on this back in 2006 when there was a big discussion about it being not included in the version released that year. I saw no use for it and I somewhat cavalierly dismissed the idea. For which I got grief.
I still have no use for it. However, seeing as it is so important to some folks here, I welcome its return if done well. By that, I mean it does not interfere with gameplay. I'm sure that will be the case now. I might even flip it on once in a while. For a few minutes. |

Markus can do a lot of things. The problem he has is that he doesn't have a full staff working on the game, so he can't pack as much in every game as a full crew could. It's too bad.

I'm sure it will come. There are many new things for many people in the current release. Ball flight (and maybe even little players on the field) will come in time. Lets enjoy what new things we're getting and be patient for the rest.

Sound is OK. We can turn it off. But if one needs or desire a graphic BB sim they should play XBox or PS3. Text, text, more text and "imagination" -- graphics can't even come close! Again, please no stickmen and ball fight! Let PS go there with the kiddies! |

What is "silly" about ball flight? It is an integral part of baseball, and would presumably be included in a baseball simulation (at some point), and I don't believe anyone said anything about "stickmen." The term I used was "little players" which would have to be proportionally correct in relation to the ballpark. Even the Apple II version in the 1980s did not use "stickmen." I strongly suspect that if any animation was offered in the future, there would be an option to deselect it - just like turning sound off. What we have been referring to in this thread was the Broadcast view of the game - which is the graphic display mode. This is the logical place for any animations. For those who might be displeased by "graphics" there is also the Webcast view of the game which increases the the text & stats and decreases the graphics. OOTP is a statistical baseball simulation which has statistical, textual, & graphic elements - and I don't think that you're going to be able to change that. Your inference that a statistical baseball game that has graphic elements would become a simple arcade game is perhaps inappropriate. You say that you want text, text, & more text. So do I! You may have overlooked the forum thread where I advocated that the major upgrade for a future release could be a complete rewrite & enhancement to the text engine connecting it to the almanac, the leaderboard, & player history (again, please review the forum records). In the broadcast view, the stadium window takes up over 40% of the computer screen. It is to be expected that, as the rest of the game is enhanced, the stadium window will be also. No one is advocating that text be reduced to make room for more graphics - least of all me. Lastly, your inference that graphics is for "kiddies" is unfortunate and unfair. I suspect that the vast majority of OOTP users watch the broadcast view more than the webcast view - and they are mostly adults, not kiddies. Of course you are certainly entitled to your preferences and opinions, but so is everyone else. Your tirade itself seems more appropriate for "kiddies" than an adult computer simulation that includes a limited amount of graphics. Please don't be like the Puritans who wanted torture anyone who didn't believe the way they did. The good news for you is that you can always play the game in Webcast view and avoid any graphic interference if it displeases you. Cheers to Markus for giving us a game that people with all different views can enjoy!

I'm also looking foward to the sound feature. And as mentioned above by some others, would welcome some more graphical elements such as ball flight and seeing players run the bases. And no, I would not be better off playing baseball on a ps3 or 360.

I, for one, think seeing ball flight paths can be useful, even in a simulation game. OOTP has included many non-text elements (logos, facegen, sound) to enhance the game, and I think flight path would be a pretty simple-looking, non-clunky way of enhancing it. It would be especially fun to see every ball motion and get pissed at your third baseman for throwing way off first base
. The problem of height is something else (how do you distinguish a pop fly from a grounder?), but as a whole, I think it would be beneficial to the game.Markus, a year ago or so, once stated that in one or two versions, he'd really like to have some sort of simple in-game graphic engine.

You don't like it, then I'm sure there will be an option to turn that OFF. It's all about having options to please the difference tastes. You have to think of others and want they would like, not just all about yourself.
