self restrictions for waiver wire

I've heard a lot of talk here about restrictions people use on themselves to keep trades somewhat fair with AI. Anyone have any good rules for using the waiver wire? When I first the game I was delighted at all the players you could pick up off waivers, now I'm trying to figure out how to restrict myself to make it more difficult and realistic. Anyone have any good rules or general guidelines they've established?

I'm thinking older ML level players are fair game, but young prospects are out of bounds? I've picked up too many young 3, 4 & 5 star prospects who really shouldn't be on the waiver wire. While ML players I can see being on it, even if they're good, for financial reasons. Although I would prefer if the AI withdrew the player and offered them in a trade if they were above a certain level talent wise.

I find the AI is actually pretty good with waivers when it comes to older players. Usually the AI only waives old guys if they're bad, in serious decline, or seriously overpaid. I've seen some prospects show up on waivers who really shouldn't be there though, so I think you've got a good house rule- avoid the prospects, the rest are fair game. I also avoid the waiver wire in the first month of a league, especially with pre-made (real life) roster sets- the rosters are really in flux then, and the AI makes some odd decisions.

EDIT- as for withdrawing guys from waivers to trade them, if OOTP were like real life, that shouldn't be allowed, at least when the player is on waivers for the purpose of removing him from the 40-man roster. Those waivers are irrevocable in real life.

I only allow myself to check the waiver wire once a month or so, but I'm allowed to get whoever I want from it when I do. I feel like that's limiting but lets an occasional good player through, which I think is realistic.

My waiver house rule is really simple. I don't allow my self to claim anyone with a an overall potential of 50 or better. That only gives me access to middle of the road or worse guys. I also force myself to put them on the 40 man lineup (whether the AI makes me or not) and I generally only claim guys that I can use right now on the 25 man roster. That keeps me from snagging the guys that the AI waives that have too much upside to be put on waivers.
