Boston Red Sox 2008 Season Official Thread

Well, that was a good game, very close and had it not been for the comical baserunning in the 10th we might have been starting 0-1 for the season.

I think Matsuzaka was a bit fazed to start with in the Dome, and I was surprised to see him out there into the 5th inning, and Papelbon seemed a bit flaky in the 10th but fair play to him to hold it together and get the save.

I hope that the Manny we saw today is going to be the Manny that Manny wants to be this season - especially if pitchers are going to be putting Ortiz on base in front of him (make the big guy run from 1st to score - how cruel)

Magic number down to 162 and we're 0.5 games up...

Red Sox got very lucky after some horrid base running in the 9th.

10th, but yes, that was probably the turning point of the game (after Ortiz being IBBed)

Luck is fine. A win is all that matters.

Manny is certainly being Manny again with that ridiculous pose in the 10th. The ball had been dying out there all game and he would have been nailed at second if Oakland didn't play to get him at 3rd.

Dice-K was a mess but worked it out. Paps was shaky but held on. Okajima looked good. And how about Moss? Happy opening day rookie!

Go Sox!

Baseball is back, and I am back! If you remember me...

I went to the opener at the Tokyo Dome!
Little strange to see the Sox in Japan, but was a good game.

I was not going to the game, as I hate those domes, but changed my mind at the last moment and got my ticket from my brother.

Welcome back myasu. Hope you had a good Christmas. It's going to be around 7 months before you get to have time off from the boards again

After all, I thought it might be my only chance to actually see the '07 World champions.

So... The Red Sox Fans!

It sure feels little strange after all the travels and "The Season Opener In Japan", but the 2008 Red Sox will re-start their season in a couple of days.

What do you guys think of their chance to REPEAT?
Will there be another championship, or will there be another disappointing season like 2005?

Some of the key players are starting to show their age (Schilling, Varitek, Ortiz, Wakefield, Timlin, and Manny even though he had a great couple of games in Tokyo), and We can not forget that many of our players had "A Great Year" in 2007, maybe one of the best years in their careers. (Lowell, Pedroia, Youkilis, Beckett, Okajima)

What do you guys think we need to do, to improve this team in order to be competitive in October/November.

I think they've got a pretty good chance of repeating as long as Beckett is healthy, that's the biggest concern I've got right now. They're due for some regression from guys like Lowell and possibly Okajima, but I think they'll get more production from the SS and CF positions as well as more production from Daisuke (regardless of his first start) and Buchholz. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lowrie step up and make the same kind of late season impact that Ellsbury made last year.

Yeah, I can definitely agree with you, Quest. I think Lugo's days are pretty much numbered, which kind of sucks. He's a nice guy and all, but I truly think Lowrie and Pedroia could be the next Vizquel/Alomar type deal (for a comparison, at least) for the next 10 years. As for Beckett, I don't think he'll have any problems. I don't think he even had an injury, I wouldn't want to go on the Japan trip either if I were him. Lowell will have 15-20 HR's this year, but the 'clutchness' may be gone.

My real worry this year is Drew's health, Lugo not hitting .220, and Varitek's offense. Besides that I think we'll be fine.

Bizarre standings at the moment. The Yankees are atop the AL East but are half a game behind

Hey, what's with siccing your resident hawk on that poor girl touring Fenway Park, just because her name is Alexa Rodriguez? That's a new low, even for you guys.

Besides, as quoted in the story, you would have done better to save the hawk for when Joba Chamberlain was in town. Now your secret weapon has been compromised. What's next, bats? The flying kind?

I think the Yankees have a lockdown on flying bats. Just ask Mike Piazza.

Well, the furry kind with small teeth and big ears is what I was talking about. Regardless, we would never stoop to enlisting the aid of creatures (midges, hawks, bats) to further our chances for success on the ballfield.

That Ortiz at bat in the first inning was hilarious...never seen a shift like that work so perfectly.
