Load game crashes at 56%

I'm running the latest-patched version of OOTP 2008 on a mac. I've been playing the default game for a little more than a year. I haven't had any trouble with it, but lately when I load the game, it freezes at 56% (loading players). I've disabled facegen, and even removed the faces.dat file. It's still freezing up. Any suggestions?
