Game freezes at 56%

I've played through a little more than a season in the game's default start-up league. I'm in late April or early May. Now I can't load the game, as its begun freezing at 56% (Loading players). I've removed the faces.dat and disabled facegen, but the problem still exists. I'm running OOTP 8 on a mac. Any suggestions?

When you say the default start-up game are you talking about the MLB quickstart (real rosters) or the MLB style setup game from the New Custom Game menu choice?
