Websites

Okay for those of you who have websites for your unis what program did you use to build the site (need something easy) and who do you use to host it? I am looking to setup a site once i settle on what my new uni will be. I can get around a computer well but m dablings into website stuff has not been very good. I would like something that i can do the work in word and then just copy and paste if that exists. Thanks in advance.

As anyone will tell you, I am not a PC whiz. I used MS Front Page to make mine. My ISP allows me webspace to display it.

Take a piece of paper, draw your webpage on it and tape it to your screen....I finally broke down and got Front Page.

I wanted to create a website for the LBA but when I started looking into it, it appeared I would be spending more time updating my website than playing the game.

Frontpage Express - it's free (you may have it on your PC already). Very easy to use once you play around with it a little. If it's not on your PC (try doing a file search for Fpxpress.exe) or search the web, there's quite a few download sites out there for it.

Most of the web hosting sites have page building tools as well that load your home page automatically after you create or edit it. When I first started out, that's what I did and it was pretty easy.

I prefer FP Express so I can build my page at my leisure off line and load it when I'm ready.

http://www.netfirms.com/max

The Netfirms Max deal is a great place to start out. $10 for the first year, then you can just move elsewhere or whatever. Thing has 2 free domain names, 500 email address, unlimited site support, more bandwidth and space then you will need, one click installs of many scripts, and it supports quite a bit more than a free host would.

To speed things up, I would look into maybe php scripts or something. Perhaps a php download site. PHP is very easy to install and actually speeds things up in the long run. You may not know how to edit it, but you probably wouldn't need to. www.hotscripts.com has a nice selection. I would do that over building something in frontpage, since it is faster to use a premade script.

As for editor. I still use text mainly. Notepad ++, Ultra Edit, and Eclipse. For you... Not sure what you could get for free or cheap that is actually worth it. There is some decent open source stuff, like:

Filezilla is great for FTP (Must have for free software):

Yeah Mike that is the same thing i am fighting with, which in turn is why i do not want to invest any money into a program.

I use Microsoft publisher for mine, it is fairly quick and I just upload to my host 20m.com. As easy a program as I have used.

Do NOT use anything from Microsoft unless someone is holding you at gunpoint. Honestly, just don't.

There's:

http://www.w3.org/Amaya/

From the W3 consortium. That'd be the folk who say what is and isn't part of HTML/XHTML etc...

Then of course there's:

http://www.seamonkey-project.org/

The free Mozilla web suite, including a pretty good web editor.

All free, all good, and better than a Microsoft abomination any day. (And please, Microsoft users, don't now all leap on me and take personal offense. This is not a slight against you. I just feel there are far superior alternatives out there. And I say that as someone who used to design webpages for a living.) And I'd say unless you plan on being professional do NOT waste money on buying an actual web design program like Dreamweaver. Honestly, either of the two above will see you right.
