Greed

I'm playing in an online league where I have one of the best hitters in the league (both in ratings and statistics), and his contract is up after the coming season (given our league financials, I'm guessing he'll be worth something like $18-20m per). Due to league rules, I have a way to modify his greed rating. Right now, his loyalty is 20, his desire for winner is 16 (which I am), and his greed is 13.

So, the question: what would the effect be on contract negotiations if I took that 13 greed and drove it all the way down to 1? Has anyone studied this, or does anyone have any anecdotal evidence?

No evidence, but I'm of the opinion that low greed and high loyalty will yield optimal contract negotiations in your case. That's just me.

Are you able to implement these modifications prior to offering an extension? Is that how the timing of your league rules will work, or will your changes take effect after he becomes a free agent? I'm not sure loyalty will matter much in the latter case.

I've got him under contract for one more season, so I've got some time to negotiate here. We're entering the offseason before his walk year, and we're allowed to modify these qualities in the offseason. So, my plan was, drive his greed down to one during the current offseason, then use next season to work out a long-term contract extension before he hits the market.

Does a player's "Greed" rating ever fluctuate naturally?

I'd like to think a future version would incorporate dynamic personality traits. Maybe this one does, but I haven't noticed it, and I believe - even if it exists - it would have marginal impact. I do notice, or imagine , that a few of these are perceived differently by different scouts. Actually, I'll have to check that now that I see the words in print. I tend to favor younger players who possess a high work ethic, and I'm almost certain I have had my decisions tilted by scouting perspectives.

So my answer's I don't know, but I'd like to think so.

That's what I've always figured, though I haven't played long enough to really see the effect of most of those personality ratings. Something I've wondered about is the interaction of loyalty and greed -- would high ratings in both categories cancel each other out? Or does greed trump?
