New Player - 3 Questions
I'm new to OOTP but I'm absolutely loving it. I had 3 fairly quick noob questions I thought I would pose here:
1. Is there a way to map the "back" function in OOTP to the button on the side of my mouse? I'm looking to go back a page in OOTP without clicking the back arrow or hitting backspace. When web browsing, my side mouse button takes me back a page and I'd love to get the same setup in OOTP. Is this possible? I think it would be a great default setting for future iterations. 2. Licensing: I bought OOTP8. Now, I thought I read somewhere that with one purchase you could have it running on two computers. Is that the case? 3. Scouting Strategy: I've been having my scouts spend a lot of time in various nations with the "scout nation" option. It's a veritable UN I've got going on my scouting staff. Is this worthwhile? It hasn't paid much fruit yet. Should my scouts being doing something more important? Thanks in advance for your assistance and it's great to be a new member of such a strong community. |

Aggro,
First off welcome to the forums and OOTP. As far as your Q's: 1) The easiest way to move around quickly is use the "Recent" drop screen on the top right hand side of the screen. Not exactly what you meant but hopefully that helps. 2) You can DL your game onto 3 different computers actually. However, you can DL it as many times as you want onto those three computers. 3) Scouting is a crap shot. I have heard some swear by it....and, others just curse it. I fly by the seat of my pants and never use scouts. I usually fire them all from top to bottom and never hire anymore. Depnds on what you wanna do I guess far as scouts are concerned. They will once and while they will find a gem. Although, IMO it's not worth the hassles. Hope I was of help and once again WELCOME!

1- don't know...
2- yes, I'm pretty sure that's how it's supposed to work- two licenses. 3- as long as hidden players are on, scouting nations can be very rewarding if you scout the top baseball countries- so rewarding that it makes the game too easy, I find. It's definitely fun, though. If you're interested in data, I ran some extended experiments using the next-to-last patch (it's possible this aspect of the game has been tweaked in the last patch or in OOTP8), and wrote up the results here; there's lots of great data from redsoxford there as well (warning- a long thread!): http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...d.php?t=151652 The summary- in Excellent nations, a scout will find roughly one player every 4 months. The number found, and the quality found, drops off as the quality of the baseball program goes down. A country's population, and the scout's ratings, don't seem to matter at all. There's not much point, from a baseball point of view, to scouting weak countries; the players you find won't be worth anything. If hidden players are off, you'll find nothing, of course, and unfortunately you can only turn hidden players on or off when you first create a league- once your league is underway, you're stuck with whatever setting you chose during league creation. Let me clarify the answer to Q2.
The license given to you when you purchase the game can be used to run two (2) versions. For most people this allows you to have copies on your desktop computer at home plus your laptop on the road. The licenses are activated when you first start up the program. If you want to use the game on a third computer you must buy another license or remove the license from one of your two running copies. If you want to format a drive you should also unlicense the game. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the assistance and the welcome! The information on the scouts and licensing definitely helps. I've been getting used to using the bookmarks and recent drop down for navigation.
I've been reading some of the Dynasty Reports and it's very interesting to hear about the many different ways people enjoy this game. I've been loving it so far and I haven't even played a regular season game yet. Just doing contract extensions, trading, signing free agents and tweaking my roster and minor leagues has been a blast. |
