I guess nobody else sees the issue with George Mitchell being a (very high ranking) Boston Red Sox employee? There's no conflict of interest at all?

If the list comes out with no Red Sox players on it, I will be suspicious, but only then

I have a feeling thats its gonna be mostly a bunch of average players.
The only superstars will probably be Canseco and maybe Palmeiro cause he got caught.

Yeah, I kind of thing the whole point of this thing is to make people feel like MLB is doing something about steroids. The really big (i.e. moneymaking) names will probably be shielded from any ramifications, except for a sacrificial lamb or two, but steroid-using scrubs better watch out.

I hope I'm proven wrong.

I think MLB is too scared of Congress to do a half-ass job or ignore star players. I think it's going to be a bombshell. The question I have is, where do they go from here? Are they going to hand out suspensions based off this report?

I feel like they're going to give quite a few names that were mentioned in the course of the investigation, but I have a hard time believing that in many cases they'll have the smoking guns that would lead to a legitimate suspension. Selig may start suspending everyone named in the report anyway, but I'm not sure what good comes of this beyond information for people who want to know as much as possible in order to make their own judgments.

I don't think that is the main conflict of interest. I think that his being a member of a major league front office is a conflict of interest in releasing what he finds out about or what he investigated in the way of what front offices new and how or if they participated.

Yeah I don't think the Red Sox will be protected much here. I just don't expect much blame to go towards anything other than players and/or the MLBPA.

I think it was you who once said that he wished the whole issue would just dry up and blow away. I still agree with that.

It really just hit me that this could be the most important day in the history of baseball...or it could be a complete let down.

It would be funny to see Carl Pavano's name on that list. People would be like "who?"

Yeah but wont the players union appeal a lot of them? Especially if they were caught before the rule was in placed or is the commission looking after the rule was in place. Because i dont see the union allowing the players to be punished unless it was after the ban against steroids. I highly doubt they will have big name players on the list. MLB wants to have the illusion they are doing something but still protect their superstars. The money will always come first no matter what baseball purists may hope for.

I was thinking the same thing when I started the thread.

Either way, I'm glad the investigation is over. For better or worse, I'd love to just move on.

I don't think Mitchell would put his name on it if it wasn't legit. I also don't think they'd risk Congress sticking their hands in by putting out a BS report after 2-3 seasons of looking like they were trying to get to the bottom of it.

I think he probably gathered information to the best of his ability. Unfortunately, without subpoena power that ability is severely limited.

I dont know i just think its more as a warning to players. I just dont see
star players getting suspended. And what if the players we as fans may think did steroids are not named? Will we beleive the investigation was legit? Are they looking at steroids only or HGH too because i was under the impression that they are not the same thing. Didnt they ban HGH also?

I have a feeling it's going to be a letdown. ESPN mentioned somewhere that the report apparently lists 60-80 people, which would be ok I guess if it were looking at one team. I also doubt that it's going to mention any names or any history that we don't already know due to admissions or positive testing.

MLB just suspended 2 players for HGH usage (despite not being able to test for it).

This article pretty much sums up why this whole thing is a joke: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3142651

All it's accomplished is once again fracturing the relationship between the union and baseball. I hope the work stoppage we get in a couple years is worth this stupid list of names tomorrow.
