Arena Baseball Online - The Dynasty Thread

I'm setting this up as a running dynasty of the Arena Baseball Online, a new league that's been several years in the making and is FINALLY able to be released due to OOTP 2007 and it's awesomeness.

The league began in 1988 and just completed the 1993 season. There are now 10 teams (began with 8) separated into two conferences, the American Conference and National Conference.

The team's play an 82-game schedule and starting in 1992, the playoffs expanded to allow the top two teams in each conference to advance to the Conference Champion Series (best-of-seven) with the Conference champs advancing to the Arena Series (best-of-seven)

The league site will take you to all of the players, their situational statistics and such alike. This thread will eventually branch out into more information about the league, the ups and downs of Arena Baseball. The league's results range anywhere from blowouts to 3-2 nail biters. It was important for this version of Arena Baseball to different from its peers in that, I wanted it to feel like baseball, no matter how small the venue is.

Feel free to post comments, questions and whatever else on this thread.

The league has already run from 1988 until 1993. We're entering the 1994 season.

AMERICAN CONFERENCE
---
New York Bears
Norfolk Captains
Buffalo Trappers
Charlotte Lions
Boston Colonials
Baltimore Browns

NATIONAL CONFERENCE
---
Chicago Comets
Memphis Hound Dogs
Omaha Monarchs (formerly the Quad City Squashers)
Louisville Sluggers
St. Louis Robins
Green Bay Hammers

The Bears are coming off back-to-back Arena Series titles and are oddly enough, the only American Conference team to claim titles since the inception of the league.

I had to run a few years to get the settings together and make sure they'd work okay before we let people in, plus I tend to like a little history before one gets started.

You might be looking around and wondering, "So, what's so different about this league?" Here are your answers. If you have other questions, they'll eventually be added to this post.

How do you get such huge stats?
Arena teams play in ARENAS. It's a controlled environment, simulated to produce lots of home runs. Doubles are more common than singles and triples are extremely rare. The idea is very similar to what Arena Football is for football. Lots of touchdowns, not lots of defense and yet...there are things that can still be similar to real life. You might get a shootout into the 30, 40 and 50 runs. Or you might get a close game.

Why are the players so bad?
Part of the reason we can get such variables in terms of player performance in games is simple. The players stink. That might annoy some. But the whole point of this league is to simulate what a real-life arena league would look like. Bottom line is, real life players with any discernable talent would be unlikely to play in a league that would erode their skills. Plus, the money stinks something awful.

We do that on purpose, too.

Has anyone ever done this before?
Well, I've tried in four other occasions. I've been testing the idea since OOTP 6. It works best in OOTP 2007 than any other.

The fact that I've opened this league up to the 'general' public, means that there will be a flurry of team moves this season. But...I think long-term, it'll be okay.

The league has run from 1988 and we're about to enter the 1994 season.

Here are the past champions.

Here are the historical leaderboards for the league for the past five years.

In case you're too lazy to look up the highlights. Here are the career leaders in selected categories. Their player cards are linked and the majority are still active players.

Andres Salas, Omaha (1B), 714 career home runs, 1241 career RBI

Rodrigo Rodriguez New York (SP) 77 career wins.

Gabriel Nelson Omaha (RF) .494 career batting average. Also holds the single-season home-run record of 146 (1988)

BALTIMORE BROWNS TO MOVE TO PITTSBURGH FOR 1994
The Baltimore Browns, who joined ABL in 1992, were sold today to a group of Pittsburgh investors who have decided to move the team to Pittsburgh, PA for the 1994 season.

"The reason I would like to move them there is because of the rich baseball fanbase that is in the city. Three Rivers has about 43,000 + each night, and putting a team in Mellon Arena during the winter will increase baseball in the city, and can provide a great place for a team to play," said a spokesman for the new ownership group.

The Pittsburgh Phantoms will play at the Pittsburgh Civic Center.

FANS CHECKING OUT NEW BASEBALL TWIST
NEW YORK -- Arena Baseball, a new twist on regular baseball has forced fans around the country to check out this new game. With crazy records such as players hitting 100 home runs over the 82-game season, hitting over .400 and non-stop action at games, fans are taking notice at this bold new twist on the national pasttime.

"It's fun, it's fresh and exciting," said Commissioner P.G. Daly, who said that his league is attracting interest from sponsors of all kinds.

"They like us a low-cost alternative to the regular game."

Arena Baseball teams pride themselves on a fan-friendly environment. Players perform clinics before games, the games end in time for kids to be in bed for school the next day and the season runs from November until early February, to give baseball their fix of the game before the pitchers and catchers report.

"It's a fun way to keep people plugged into the game," said Joe Taylor, an executive with Taylor & Bradshaw, an investment firm that's put money into the league.

"We think it's got tons of upside and we're looking forward to the future."

With labor strife rankling MLB fans and salaries spiraling out of control, a league where the top player in the league only makes $108 per game, is something that the average fan can identify with.

"This is cool. I feel like these guys are no different than me," said Pauley Gibson, a welder from Norfolk, who says he goes to games all season. "I can bring the three kids, their friends and my wife for the price of one ticket at an NFL game or something. It's super."

The future looks bright for the 10-team league, that is reportedly looking at western expansion in the next few years and has yielded significant interest from a flurry of newer owners looking to potentially cash in.

"Everyone grows up wanting to run a team and this lets them do it for a fraction of the price of a big-time team."

There is all sorts of change in the Arena League, as several teams have announced moves or name changes for the 1994 season.

That leaves Charlotte, Chicago, Louisville, Memphis, Norfolk, Omaha and St. Louis as available clubs as the clubs that have not changed ownership as of yet and are still available.

Boston was acquired and will become the Boston Bombers next season. The Green Bay franchise was acquired and moved to Casper, Wyoming and will become the Wyoming Wranglers. Buffalo was moved to Orlando, Florida where they'll become the Orlando Orcas.

Since there isn't going to be a draft in this league, we're going to have an annual infusion of 'new' talent in the form of players who are a little better than the league average. In fact, there will be a few gems in the pool. Because in a league like this, the talent level would improve each year over time, I'd like to see it happen and the best way to do that, is to augment the talent pool.

In anticipation of a bunch of moves that have happened and others we see coming, there will probably be a shift in the alignment of the conferences. We'll likely be switching to an Eastern/Western Conference format from an American/National setup. It depends on where the teams end up in the end, but...what's on the table.

1994 SEASON IS SET TO GO!

The 1994 Arena Baseball Online Season will begin this week with eight teams in two newly named and aligned conferences. Given the flurry of team moves prior to the start of the season, the league office decided to move forward with a proposal that would alter the way the league looked.

The new trimmed down 8-team league will begin its season this November with the following lineup:

EASTERN CONFERENCE
---
Boston Bombers
Pittsburgh Phantoms
New York Bears
Orlando Orcas

WESTERN CONFERENCE
---
Chicago Comets
Las Vegas Captains
Wyoming Wranglers
