Fyi To Commished - Banned Player

Chris Nashed, owner of the Boston Outlaws, has been booted from the EBL.

He attempted to stack his team by taking over the Montreal Expos and trading all its talent over for virtually nothing. After a check of emails and message board posts, it was found that the IP addy was the same for Nashed and "John Williams".

Chris' explanation was that "Williams" was a friend of his who did not have a computer and was using his. This does not make any sense, as Williams, from an initial conversation with him, was supposed to be living in a different part of the country from Nashed, as well as the fact that he was telling people he was in AIM trade conversations with Montreal, etc.

I asked several owners to look over the information and the emails, and they all agreed that Nashed tried to cheat and got caught, and as such should be banned.

Banned are:

Chris Nashed - Boston Outlaws owner, AIM is chrisxftw, NaSh x 7, email ischrisftw@msn.com, IP addy is 63.16.4.149

Nashed also attempted to take over the Montreal Expos as John Williams - AIM is EBLMontreal, email is youbeenpoopedon@msn.com, IP addy is 63.16.4.149

I, as I am sure all commissioners do, really appreciate this information. These online leagues are intended to be fun and competitive; anyone who tries to cheat like Mr. Nashed deserves to be banned for life. I believe if you cannot build a good team (or at least try) through honest and savvy player moves you should not be involved in any of these great leagues.

You know what would be good? A website for banned owners. There could even be a section for repremanded owners or something like that. It would help all of the commissioners out greatly when naming owners. You could also list some highly recommended owners or top performers.

Thanks again,

Chris Nashed.... and John Williams.... hmmm.. those are MY aliases for the leagues i'm in.... not only did he run two teams.. he stole my identities.. lol...

On a serious note.. I wish there were more commissioners out there that would check IP addy's of their owners.. cause I think there is a lot more of this going on than is showing up. [some of this maybe be due to the fact that some guys don't know how to check IP's.]

Kurtis

P.S. CUBL running with no multiple team owners since 2000
(had a cheater first season)

I do check the IP addresses of my members, one slight problem though, SOME boards (such as Ikon boards) post the Subnet masks of users on AOL - so in the NAHHBL it appeared as though one guy was running 5 teams... which he wasn't, but until the mess was straightened out there was a bit of chaos.

So be warned, people on AOL can, will, and do sometimes have the EXACT same IP because it's not really the IP posting.

Say, do you need an Expos owner? I've been searching and searching for an opening in a good realistic rosters league and the Expos are my favorite team.

IP Addy checking:

3 ways that I know of doing it.

1. If you use outlook express.. open up an email.. the go FILE/PROPERTIES/DETAILS/MESSAGE SOURCE

You will usually see 2 "IP addy's" the first one in the list I think is the server or provider address.... and the second is the "user" addy. This does not work with hotmail, yahoo (free email addy's) IT MUST BE A HOME EMAIL ADDY On entering a league.. the new owner should be prompted to supply a home email address.

2. Use a message board that tracks IP addy's. There are tonnes of free message boards that track IP's. [Just do a search for message boards.. and look at the examples.. you'll find them]

3. ICQ.. when using ICQ.. if the person on your buddy list has not "hidden" their IP address.. you can see it in their details.

Remember.. if two people are from the same area.. their IP address can be very similar.

you can check a freemail addy

on a freemail account - hotmail, etc., there is still an IP addy in the email message source.... i dont think it works for yahoo though....

Commishs who join the ootp and stb commish board are privy to such a list you are describing.

In order to join the board you must be running a league.
when appling you must include your league name and address.

A note on IP checking

Just a note for commishes trying to stamp out owners playing multiple teams...

For those unfortunate enough to use AOL, AOL uses something called a megaproxy.. Without going into long technical, boring details on what that is or how it works, the end result will be many many AOL users might end up showing up as being from the same IP address.

On my servers, I sometimes see dozens of people that are unique users with the same IP from AOL.

Just something to be cautious about jumping to conclusions on just IP alone.

You actually accepted an application from an owner with that email address and didn't suspect anything? Sharp as a bowling ball.

One of my leagues had a potential cheating problem crop up recently. The Commish ultimately decided it was not cheating, but it did create a stir. The allegations centered around one owner specifically recruiting a new owner (friend) to initiate a trade with them to free up some cap room.

One of the things that came out of the outcry and subsequent investigation was that there are owners in the league that don't even own OOTP. This seems silly to me. Does anyone out there allow people to take over teams that do not even own OOTP?! That seems like you are just asking for cheating. Also, making it worse, this league does not upload player pages to the website so you don't even a somewhat comprehensive picture of the players sans the OOTP game.

The new XBL ran without anyone having to own a copy of OOTP4. I think BALL2 is the same way.

In the TSTBL we have one owner who does own the game, but is currently in the Navy, stationed in the Middle East without the game. As a matter of fact, I think he has only had access to the game while he was "home" with his family for a few weeks this past Holiday season. He has daily Internet access via a cyber-cafe and can access the league's website there. I am not saying we have the most comprehensive stats out there, but with the History file and full game-generated HTML output, I think that he can make intelligent decisions about his team. He submits any promotions/demotions, along with full pitching staff assignments and line-ups to me by e-mail before every sim. He's been in our league for over 2.5 seasons, and has had access to the game for basically one offseason. Off the top of my head, I don't think he has missed submitting a line-up for a sim in the two-and-a-half years he's been in the league, and his team is the only one in the TSTBL whose winning percentage has increased every season.

Ideally, you do want every owner to have the game, but if you find the right, dedicated person, it's not completely necessary.

Just my $0.02.
