slumps and hot streaks
I've a few very good players in slumps right now, so I wanted to understand what it is that causes a player to go hot or cold, and what it is that brings them out of it. Specifically, does a player need playing time to work themselves out of a slump? I have two pitchers that have been slumping all season, and I've wondered if this has something to do with the fact that I hardly let them touch a baseball in their state.

The manual mentions that a player's 'work ethic' rating plays a role in slumps and hot streaks, though it doesn't go into much detail. I'd guess a high work ethic guy will snap out of a slump more easily than a lazy one. There is a hidden 'rust' rating, which is certainly used in Spring Training, and from other threads I have the impression that it is used in-season as well. If a guy is riding the bench, he'll probably get rusty, negatively affecting his performance.
I'm sure there's a lot of luck and randomness involved in streaks and slumps, just as in real life. There was another thread recently- maybe you can find it through the forum search- on this topic, where several people discussed how they break pitchers out of slumps. |
