OOTP not responding

On my work box, occasionally I'll open OOTP4, then alt-tab away and do some other stuff. If I leave it unattended for too long, it will stop responding, when I click on the button in the taskbar, I just get a window frame, but nothing OOTPish inside of it. I'm using WinXP here.

Did your Screen Saver kick on? OOTP often has redrawnig problems when screen savers kick on.

Also are you playing in Windowed mode? (Use the Graphics Setup program to set up Windowed mode) OOTP reacts to being minimzed much nicer in Windowed mode, In Full Screen mode I think I remember hearing of occaisional redrawing problems when the program is sent to the back ground or minimized.

I'll have to check on the screen saver bit. But I'm playing in windowed mode, yes.

It can also depend on the amount of RAM that you have, I have 512 meg and have no problems.

What about locking your PC (on a win2k/xp machine)?

Is there any work around for the Screen Saver problem? I just got this game and discovered this one the hard way. When I walk away from my XP machine with OOTP4 running, when I come back the game is frozen and the window won't redraw. Is there anyway to avoid this. Otherwise, its going to be a real pain having to remember to save the game every time I turn away from the computer to watch part of a world series game.

I found if I leave the window active (don't alt-tab away from it), it doesn't happen...but if I switch windows around, bye-bye. Only happens @ work though, doesn't seem to at home.

redraws

Seems to be an XP/screen saver redraw problem. It may happen in other platforms as well but I have not seen it in 98 yet. 98 works great at home with a p2-350 128mb, at work I have a p3 733 with 256mb ram and when I lock the cpu while minimized it will not redraw the screen. Very frustrating. Does it as windowed screen. Also does it when you lock the cpu with game on the screen. even for just 2 seconds, unlock and it cannot bring back the game.

Certain programs don't like screen savers, either close the program or disable the screensavers.

redraws

This is a bit of a different problem, I don't have my screensaver enabled, this is when you force a lock on the cpu with XP.

You are actually just locking your screen, not the CPU, so this redraw issue is the same as the XP screensaver and the user-logout issue with OOTP and XP. Actually doesn't locking your screen in XP do the same thing as a PW-protected screen saver? I also recall XP uses a autologout screensaver if your screen remains locked for 10-15 minutes, though that does not sound like your problem here.

The XP redraw workaround solutions would seem to be:
- XP users should not have a screensaver enabled while they play OOTP (screen savers are over rated anyway.
- XP users should close the OOTP program when logging off.
- XP users should not use the lock workstation feature of XP while playing OOTP.
