Expansion Teams and the Amateur Draft
Newbie looking for info -
I am curious how this works. I understood the Amateur draft to be in reverse order of record from the previous year. So I expected the expansion teams to either be the first, or last. Instead, they seem to be randomly distributed. What am I missing? Thanks! |

The best I can do is give this a bump. I (stupidly, it turns out) expanded my league after the amateur draft. Then the expansion teams drafted most of my draftees in their draft.
Had I done it the smart way, I would have the same question you do. |

I have noticed the same thing in my leagues both in 2007 and when I did manual expansions in 2006, but because my leagues allow draft pick trading I couldn't be sure what the order was supposed to be.
However I suspect that the game treats expansion teams the same way it does the initial amateur draft and uses the expansion teams' records at the time of the draft to establish their position in the draft. I don't know if there is any validity to this theory, but I have noticed that expansion teams with better records at the time of the draft, pick later than the others. The fact I allow draft pick trading confuses things though, so someone else with more knowledge will have to settle the issue. But that is what I think is happening. |

Heh, that scenario hadn't even occurred to me. Just seems a tad bizarre to slip expansion teams in based on their current record amongst teams based on their previous year record. But now that I think about it, that makes more sense, based on where my team drafted, than my initial thought that it appeared random.
I had assumed (I know, don't assume-gnnn) that expansion teams would automatically be first. Damn glad I made that one trade for a high extra first round pick or this expansion team woulda really been hurting. Guess that is a rather insignificant issue to fix compared to real bug issues tho, so I'll file it away in the "Quirky, but deal with it" file ![]() Thanks for the feedback! |

when I expanded, I moved the amateur draft to late Dec, so it was in the off season, 2 months after expansion. if you do it that way, the expansion teams get the first picks

That's a good idea. It should probably work with the draft set any time after the expansion and before the next opening day, like on March 1st.

Ditto on the good idea!
So used to just playing with the default setting there, never even occurred to me what would happen if Exp. teams had no record. Thanks! |

I have not actually done an expansion draft, though I have had leagues expand after one or more seasons had been completed. I noticed that in the period after the new teams were created, but before the new season began, the new teams appeared in the last-year's-standings list with 0-0 records, and were ranked as if that was .500.
