Claim and Trade

I've developed a technique that I think may be an exploit and thus need a house rule. I"ve occassionally picked up average players on waivers then turned around and traded them either for a player I need, a prospect, or a draft choice. The more I think about it, the more this seems to be an exploit of the A/I and I am looking for comments on that.

In addition, I was wondering if someone could tell me what the real-life Major League rules are on claim and trade; that is, if there are any.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

In the majors I believe you can claim and trade. The team you trade to has to keep that claimed player on their major league roster or else the original team you got the claimed player gets them back. I hope the AI "knows" this.

I thought that was only for the rule 5 draft?

I thought that was Rule V, also.

There are no specific rules against claiming a player and trading him in the same season.

The problem here is if the AI is passing on a player for free, then is willing to trade for that same player without any intervening cause. If you can trade a claimed player to an AI team that had higher claim priority without that AI team having anything change (i.e., an intervening injury) that is a problem. I can't tell if that is happening here, though.

I think I get your point. If I'm going to trade the claimed player to an A/I team that could have claimed him ahead of me, then that's an exploit. If I trade him to a team that had a better record than me, then that should be OK.

Interesting that MLB lets you do this.

MLB lets you do it, but it really wouldn't make sense to do. So, I guess there is no reason to have a rule against it, because it wouldn't make sense for a team to trade for a guy they could have claimed. Especially if you are talking about it within a short period of time.

I think only the nba has rules in place where if you pick up a new player(via the draft, trade, free agency) that they have to be on your roster for a certain time before you can trade them again.
