Game won't let me demote an injured player

My ace is out for 1 week. My 'pen is exhausted. I'm in first place by 2 games, but am 3-7 in my last 10 games. I don't want to put my ace on the dl because we need him the instant he's ready. I just signed a barely-above-replacement level FA and plan to either demote or release him as soon as the ace is back in the rotation.

When I try to demote my ace, I get a pop-up that says "Player is injured, put him on the DL instead." There doesn't seem to be a way around this. I don't want him on the dl. I want him riding the pine in AAA until the day he gets better. The DL will make him miss 2 starts. Is there any way around this?

Ugh, that's terrible. Never seen it before, CB.

This is the way it should be...you can't take your ace and send him to AAA just because you want to use the roster spot. It is either the DL or adjust by sending a bench player down & going without the bench depth for a week. MLB doesn't allow this to happen so I really doubt OOTP is going to let you, the players' association would go nuts. Plus, IRL you can't bring a guy up after sending him down for 10 days anyway.

The one thing the game needs that it doesn't have is being able to retroactively put someone on the DL. So, if a pitcher gets hurt but you think you can get by for a week without calling anybody up, but then on the 4th day you play an 18-inning marathon changing your plans. You should be able to place the pitcher on the DL retroactive back to the day after he last played.

Yeah that would be a nice addition...

How does it work then when MLB teams send players down for "rehab" assignments.

A player can only be placed on a rehab assignment while he is on the DL. Andymac is right that MLB does not allow you to demote an injured player and that you cannot call a player back up until after 10 days unless there is an injury on the team requiring another player to be palced on the DL.

Here is a link explaining rehab assignments and roster rules in general.

I had no idea that was the case. I was just trying to be a crafty GM. It shouldn't matter that he's my ace, though. He has option years left. I'm going to send down a bench player, but I'm in a real mess: carrying 14 pitchers at the moment. <-- Not such a crafty GM after all.

You could 'cheat' by changing to commish mode and assigning him to the minor league team.

I won't tell the AI if you don't.

Could he DFA him and then place him back on the ML roster when that time is up? I'm not sure how long his DFA period is, but teams use this method when they want to remove a player from the active roster, but are not going to put him in AAA (they are going to trade him instead).

I'm not sure about the consequences of this so use at your own risk!

I have no idea what the MLB rules are in this regards but I would venture a guess that they have some way of preventing it (just because I have never heard of it happening). I don't know whether the game will let you DFA an injured player but if it does then this would probably work in-game.

Found this explanation on-line. So if OOTP models this, then it is definitely not a good idea since the player must be put through waivers before you could put him back on the ML team. Of course you might be able to do revocable waivers in game, but I'm pretty sure the ML rule would be un-revocable waivers.

Designation for Assignment
A team can also designate a player for assignment. This method is used when a team needs to open a spot on the 40-man roster, but isn’t quite sure what to do with the player. A “DFA” player is taken off the 40-man roster immediately, but then sits in limbo for up to ten days, during which time the team can try to trade him. If the player isn’t traded, the team must release him or put him on waivers. If he clears waivers, he can be sent to the minor leagues (though again, if he has 5 years or more of MLB experience, he can declare free agency).

You cannot use the DFA to put a guy in limbo to then just put him back on the major league roster again. DFA is for when you know you want to get rid of the guy but have yet to find a trade for him yet.

We're talking about workarounds here.

If you want to be playing the game "by the rules," you either have to DL him, or he eats a roster spot. Anything else, and you're just cheating the game.

If you want to give yourself a "retroactive DL," you could DL him, then when you need him off the DL, go into commish mode and change his remaining DL time.

At least then you'd be following real-world rules.

Ooh, perfect. I think I'll employ this workaround. Especially as it's not cheating -- it's filling in a gap.

If you are near the end of the season, you should have an expanded roster and would not need to send him down, just promote someone to replace him. If it is the middle of the season then it is too soon to worry about a 2 game lead. Just DL him

It is just filling the gap in a way the AI can't, fwiw.

Only a game, just sayin' that I'd have a house rule agianst it.

The way I understand retroactive DL, though, is that you can only make it retroactive from the last time that player played in a game. So if he was injured on the 3rd, but pinch hit or something on the 7th, you can only make it retroactive to the 7th. Thus, he wouldn't be available to play until the 23rd.

So a retroactive DL wouldn't really help in the original problem. A retroactive DL doesn't just make the DL time shorter, it adjusts for the last time the player entered a game.

That is true. The player can be put on the DL retroactively but still has to wait 15 days from the last game action the player had. So if the player is out for a week as the OP said, he should still be kept on the DL for 8 days while healthy.
