Historical Players Underperforming
So I'm pretty new to the whole historical sim thing. I've started one back from 1901, running the Pirates. My only major concern is that certain historical players are seriously underperforming. Notably Honus Wagner. The first two seasons he his .333 and then .294. In '03, he's hitting all of .230. His real life numbers for those seasons were .353, .330, and .355. Pretty notable drop. I can't figure out why. I've tried moving him around in the batting order, tried adjusting his individual settings, but nothing seems to do much. He just isn't hitting all that well. I'm not sure its anything to do with my game settings - I have it set to recalculate on 3 years, and most of the bigger players are hitting well - Lajoie, Delahanty, etc. Wondering if anyone else has run into something like this. Is it just Wagner or is there something I could try to get him hitting?
The other slightly odd thing I've noticed is that a historical player who doesn't seem to stand out in any major way - Roy Thomas of the Philles - has hit over .400 the first two years and is doing so again. He hit .309, .286, and .327 in 01-03 in reality but he's the top player in the game and his attributes don't really show why. |

The first two seasons for Wagner are within the normal deviations, so I'd just guess you're looking at the vagaries of chance unless he's hitting .230 in August. Does he have an injury this year? Even a minor one can send a player into a tailspin for the season. As for Roy Thomas, I'd ask the people who actually know whether eye affects the contact rating in some minor way. Thomas is one of my personal favorites, but .400 is a bit high for a full season. I think I'll play with the Eye rating in the editor and see if the contact rating changes with it.

Its not a huge problem, really. Moreso, its just that Wagner is one of my favorite early major leaguers and I am concerned that if he continues to play poorly, he may not even make the HoF in the game. He hasn't been injured and I don't think he's even been on cold streaks. All three seasons, he's started out slow then gradually recovered, but he doesn't seem to be doing much of the recovery in '03.
As for Roy Thomas, he's the opposite. He starts out really every season. In '01, he was actually hitting .445-.450 through August but finally tailed off late. Both of the first two seasons, he's lead in most of the major hitting categories. I know he was pretty good, but in this game, he's the absolute best. |

Ive also noticed players underperform. Not everytime but most times. I usually find people like Jimmie Foxx hitting 25-30hrs a season, while IRL he was hitting more like 40-45. But i think its mostly pitchers who do rubbish. I find frequently someone like Walter Johnson playing for a great team yet losing about 20 games a year.
