Auto-Sim Speed

Ok, I've read posts from some people saying they sim 100 seasons or more overnight. I just tried it last night (32 team majors, default minors, college,
HS, and 4 other feeder leagues). I only got through 16 seasons before I woke up (8 hours).

Other than the obvious size of universe answers, what is the hardware "choke point(s)" for sim speed?

How often you're saving the league, how detailed your stats are, if you're keeping logs and box scores, if you're generating an almanac every season....

Obvious, I'm sure, but your core processor speed and RAM are two big hardware factors.

Beyond some of the things that Billethius mentioned, it's the leagues and RAM.

What do you mean by "default minors"? You mean 5 levels of minors? If so, it sounds like you have 12 full leagues in your game, and that's a decent chunk of players.

I'm fairly certain most of the people who sim 100 years in a night are looking at much smaller setups...just my 3 cents tho'.

I wondered about this, too. I have a universe with the basics (ML, AAA, AA, A, S A, R) plus one feeder. Everything is turned off (almanac, logs, box scores), dialog only enabled, no facegen, highly detailed stats only for ML, high for others, except the feeder is lowest stats level... and I got a whopping 24 seasons in 8 hours.

The system is a 3 ghz, 1gb mem, with nothing running in the background. How on earth does anyone get 100 seasons over night? Is this on a supercomputer?

I'll try it on my dual core processor at home tonight and see if there's any difference, but my work computer only chokes out 24 seasons every 8 hours.

As mentioend above, I think the people doing 100 seasons in one night are usually doing historical replays. So, for example, when I've done historical replays, I've had no minors and no free agency until 1975. Doing it that way, I can easily get to 1975 within two hours. In 1975 I turn on free agency and usually add at least a single level of minors. Things start to slow down at that point.

Thanks, I will try lowering the stats level for the minors and feeder leagues. My RAM and processor are comparable to others mentioned, so it must be the sheer volume of games and players being simmed. What I am doing is simming so that I have 100 years of history before I take over one of the big league clubs... I guess I'll just grind it out over the next week or so before I take over! Thanks all.

Yeah, for example, I've done a ton of fictional tests, just while writing the manual. I'll do a 16-team league with no minors, all other settings default (which means no almanac). Of course, I can accomplish a lot more in 8 hours than you did in your league.

There are a lot of variables, but at the end of day, probably the most important variables are on the Database Info page: # of teams, # of players.

A gig of RAM now days is like having only 512 a few years ago. My two home PCs have 2 and 4 gigs respectivly. Also, the type and speed of your hard drive, along with the interface for them, also has a very large effect on your multi year sim speeds.

Also check to see if you have virus scan running. Even though it might only take 5% of the CPU time, that may add up over the course of the night.

Go to your OOTP Preferences, 3rd option down.

Set this to "Simple Dialog".

You will see a very noticable difference in sim speed.

There was another thread about this a couple days ago, and it turned out the guy had antivirus running. I easily get 50+ seasons overnight with the full MLB and minors setup, 1GB RAM 3GHz CPU.

I'm going to have to check my antivirus. I almost always turn it off when running a resource intensive program like this, but sometimes I forget. I will make sure to do that tonight.

Also, I will make sure I have simple dialog. I already only save once per year and no almanacs.

Thanks again for the advice.
