40 man roster
How do i release a player from the 40 man roster...short of releasing him. The instructions say put him on waivers. Let them expire then drop him into the white box...at that point you are suppose to be able to designate him for assignment. I do all this...try to get him off the 40 man roster and it tells me to put him on waivers...again.
eh?

That doesn't work for me. I put him on waivers and DFA at the same time. He then cleared waivers and I took him off waivers and tried to transfer him from DFA to AA. The computer then told me that it can't be done, since he is under a major league contract and needs to be on the 40-man roster. Am I doing something wrong? I remember that this was an issue last year too (ootp2006). I guess it hasn't been sorted out. |

i'm pretty sure you are running into an actual MLB rule, and not a problem with the game. You might want to check the player's option years. It is my understanding that after 3 years of going back and forth from the minor to majors, once you put a player on the 40-man roster, he has to stay there, no matter what. Again, i could be wrong, but if your guy is out of option years, that is probably what is happening.

This is what the manual says in 19.6.2: "When a player is placed on outright waivers, that player is made available to any team in the league that
wants to claim him. If the player clears these waivers, the club can process the transaction it wanted to undertake (remove him from the secondary roster, demote him to the minors, and so on), as long as no other provisions need to be met, such as gaining the player’s permission. This waiver is irrevocable, meaning that if the player is claimed by another team, he is lost by the waiving team with no compensation." 19.3.4 says: "A team wanting to remove a player from the secondary roster must first place the player on waivers, as described in Section 19.6. If the player clears waivers, the player can then be sent to the minors. Doing this is called “outrighting” the player to the minors. If a player has five years of major league service time, he can also elect to refuse assignment and become a free agent. The steps to remove a player from the secondary roster are as follows: 1. Waive the player and designate him for assignment. You can do this by right-clicking on the player and selecting Transactions > Waive & Designate for Assignment. 2. If the player accepts the assignment, and clears waivers, remove him from the secondary roster by dragging him from the secondary roster to the bottom area of the Transaction page, as described in Section 7.3.2."... I think the game works almost as it is said to. But the manual states that a player under a major league contract MUST stay on the 40-man roster. However, that is not true in the game. I have put players through waivers and DFA with less than five years of service time and thus, taken them off the 40-man roster. But they still have a major league contract... I think that when you try to take a player with five years or more of service time off the 40-man roster by waiving him as described above - the game tells you that it is impossible since he is under a ML contract. It would be better if the game said that it is impossible since the player "refuses" the assignment and elects to become a free agent instead... |

Players (no matter how long they have been on the 40 man) can also refuse an assigment to the minors if they have been outrighted once before. Everytime I've seen this message pop up is when a player is being outrighted for the second (+) time or when he has been on the active roster for more than 5 years. I'd love to see the messaging change, but the rules seem to work pretty well.
