historical defense
First of all, I'd like to express my appreciation to RedSox45 and MattH3322 for expressing a willingness to look into some defensive issues I see that this game might have. I didn't want to hijack Matt's thread, so I thought I'd start a new one to reiterate some questions I've been trying to flush out the answers to the last couple of weeks.1) Do the good defensive players like Brooks Robinson and Ozzie Smith have better defensive ratings than average players; and are average players ranked better defensively than poor fielders like Dick Allen?2) Does it matter in the game? In other words, is it better to have an outstanding defensive player like Ozzie Smith at short with a .262 BA and 1-2HR/yr than a player with average defense that hits .265 and about 7 HR/yr?3) If defense is relavent, does the AI recognize this when selecting the lineup?

I apologize about the spacing on that last post. There was a full blank line before each question when I typed it in - but it all got squished together when I posted it, and won't let me edit it.

Fibonacci,
I'll be honest. I don't have the answers for you. But I have alerted the Historical Team in Beta to your concerns so that they can help give you an intelligent answer. Will

There is a discussion on fielding somewhere in Beta that addresses some of these issues. If I can find it I'll paraphrase the best I can. I am quite sure that Markus addressed Ozzie specifically as an example of a higher defensive performance. As to the AI, I don't know yet.
Stay tuned.

1) The OF is pretty much spot on as far as range goes and outfielders ratings are reasonably accurate with the better fielders having the better ratings. In the infield not so much. Brooksie and Ozzie for instance generally are in the bottom half to bottom third of the ratings. Not Always but Generally. Gold Gloves in the infield go to "Huh?" more often than not. The OF Gold Gloves are way more reasonable, usually one or two of the three are who you might expect.
2) The game seems to like Pitching - Hitting - Defense in that order. Small changes to pitching ratings can move a team from worst to first, moderate changes to batting ratings will do the same. Even with all fielders having 100 ratings on defense you can't go from worst to first. 3) In selecting Lineups Hitting definitely trumps Defense. |
