Personal OOTP disaster
I just wanted to tell everyone about my recent OOTP disaster for sympathy, and not necessarily advice.
Well... For the last 2 months I've been working on original logos, unis and stadiums for my 24 team fictional league. Re-working certain things to make everything look perfect for the new version. However, I have recently lost the usb flash drive that I had my whole project on. 2 months down the friggin drain only 4 days before release. This does give me a chance to try my plan B. I was thinking of letting the computer randomly generate the cities and nicknames. Then I would rearrange teams in divisions that are geographically correct. Then expand the league some sim years later and put the new teams where it makes sense to have them so the league looks nice and even. Then I would take the interesting task of making logos and unis for these random teams. I think it would be kind of fun to make logos for the Talahasee Wombats or something like that. Anyway, I'm just ranting. Feel free to comment or ignore my sob story. |

Well, I guess that's why it's best to keep things on a hard drive instead of a flash drive. But I'm sure you know that. Anyway, I've had similar things happen (lost a CD with lots of great stuff on it), so I sympathize.
Your plan B actually sounds kind of interesting. Somehow I've never really considered keeping the random city and team name setup that is produced, but there's something intriguing about the idea. It might be fun to make a bunch of logos for the random teams that would be produced. I might have to give this a try, too. I'll have to get rid of some of the more egregiously bad names in the file first, though.

That sucks man....good luck with plan B.
The worse one for me was my very first league started in OOTP 3 and made it as far as OOTP 6. I play out my games one at a time so even though that was like 3-4 years...I had only made it through 24 seasons. I got a new computer....and forgot to make a back up of that league before I formatted. I've struggled to capture the same feeling I had toward that league. |

Sorry to hear that Diamond.
Here's hoping that the release of the game gives you enjoyment that you forget about losing your flashdrive. |

My condolences,
Your story inspired me to backup my logos and unis on my other spare PC just in case. I do however always have my photobucket which might be a good idea for any of your future projects as a fall back point.

I did part of plan B, the random nicknames part. Hence, the Seattle Maniacs, the Chicago Blues, and the Detroit drivers. All very appropriate names, though you do end up with finding pics for a St. Louis Hippos logo!

For instance, let's say you have logos for the Bobcats, the Railers, and the Snakes. No city name in the logos. You end up with the Seattle Bobcats, the Corpus Christi Railers, and the Omaha Snakes. You edit the logos, putting in the city names, and rename them appropriately.

Do you know that you can password protect USB drives? I didn't learn that until this year, but have since done so because I put a lot of my client files on them. It won't bring anything back, but will at least give you some piece of mind if you ever lose it.

Dude, that really sucks. Perhaps the new trend should be to get a hard drive copy, flash drive copy, and upload it to a ftp somewhere.... so much work for piece of mind, eh?

Bad news. Sorry. Every time I've lost something of that size and nature, I've been fortunate enough to recover it (almost every time), and nearly always in the same place, hidden between the side of my front car seat wedged in between the door and the side of the seat itself. No chance you had it in your pocket on a drive, is there? I hope for the best, and maybe it'll turn up.

I'm backing mine up on my external hard drive immediately after I post this. I also spent many hours with logos and spreadsheets getting ready for OOTP 2007.

Yep. My main USB drive is not only password protected, but some of the more sensitive files on it are also encrypted.
