Chicago White Sox 2007 Thread

Alright, it's on.

A couple of notes from the Sun-Times yesterday:

Quote:
Masset didn't disappoint, showing nasty velocity on his fastball and movement to the inside and outside of the plate. At one point after Masset was finished, Williams even yelled to A.J. Pierzynski to get the catcher's reaction to Masset's throwing session. Pierzynski responded with a thumbs up.
Quote:
In the pitchers' first batting practice of the spring, Jenks crushed a pitch over the left-field wall and into the parking lot beyond the practice field.
So, let's see...Uribe apparently is in camp (since I didn't see anything to the contrary). 2/3 of the outfield is a question mark. The bullpen guys all throw really, really hard. Gavin Floyd may be the fifth starter. Crede's back feels good.

Buehrle apparently turned down a 3-year deal around the All-Star break last year, and see what that got him!

The Sox held their first intrasquad game today, with the Thomes knocking off the Konerkos 7-5. Nick Masset gets the win, and Gavin Floyd left the game with a sprained ankle, although it's not considered serious.

The best part of the game came courtesy of Scott Reifert's blog:

Quote:
The first ball of the game was hit to shortstop Juan Uribe.

"Don't hit it to Uribe," someone shouted, "He's on a work-release program."

He was part of the McCarthy trade with Texas. Here is some pretty good information on him http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/sto...2/25/2278/7428. YITBOS by the way.

Anyhow, on to 2007 - the first ST game is Wednesday(!) and will be aired locally on WSCR-AM. Even though it's gonna be Farmer & Singleton again, I can't wait to hear baseball!

Thanks. I hope he can supplant Boone.

And YITBOS!

booo sox.

See, mine is reasonable. My team was able to beat them last year. Unlike yours.

Yeah, I think the Sox picked up 4 or 5 guys this off-season that could supplant Boone Logan. And I'm including Darin Erstad in that number.

Logan wasn't ready last year - he came up to the bigs with only 4 innings thrown at a level higher than rookie ball (and those were a pretty rocky 4 innings), and he recently admitted to having a "mental breakdown" last season. Yet, for all that, I keep hearing about Logan maybe making the team again this year, which I just don't get.

Unless Logan has another spring like he did last year, I fully expect Logan to start the year in Charlotte.

My prediction for the Sox' staff on opening day:

SP: Contreras, Garland, Buehrle, Vazquez, Floyd
RHRP: Aardsma, MacDougal, Massett, Jenks
LHRP: Thornton, Sisco.

If they break camp with 12 guys, maybe Logan will be that guy, but he'll be the first guy to get a ticket back to AAA. It's more likely to be Haeger, IMO

Danks is the one you'll probably end up enjoying most from that deal.

Yeah, Danks was the centerpiece as far as the Sox were concerned. But I don't see him making the team this year (at least not at first). He's not even on the 40-man roster at this point.

I'm very excited about Danks. I do hope that he does not become one of those guys with "potential" that never develops. Cooper does have a knack of bringing out the best in a lot of pitchers, which makes me a little more optimistic.

I also hope that Erstad does a complete turnaround and gets back to his old numbers a la "Jermaine Dye". Not that he was as good as Dye, but he used to be a very good hitter. There are a lot of question marks this year, but hopefully they will go the right way like 2005.

Agree with you here, but somehow I doubt it. Outside of Dye, our outfield is not going to be very good.

I was just checking out Erstad's numbers at BBreference and his 2000 season was pretty impressive.

.355 BA, 25 HR, 100 RBI, 25SB, 39 2B, .409 OBP, .541 slg finished 8th in MVP voting.

Damn. I didnt know he ever had a year like that.

Yeah, but that year was decidedly an enigma for Erstad - kind of like the year Wade Boggs hit 24 homers.

Remember when KW almost traded Garland for Erstad? Those were the days.

don't look to much into those numbers. That will probably be his best of his career.
