Bugs Bunny and the ABA Unite

On Monday, August 3, 1987, Dr. Louis Cooper, President of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and Dr. Jocelyn Messer-Hinton, Chair-woman of the American Psychological Association, issued a joint press briefing condemning the "aggressive" logos of the newly formed ABA.

In a 23 minute speech, Dr. Messer-Hinton stated, "Of the league's 24 teams, only two of them have appropriate insignias. The others foster hyper-aggressive emotions, and if left unchecked, could promote violence in children."

Following those remarks, Dr. Cooper added in a shorter press statement, that he would hope that the ABA would act responsibly and either change some of the team names, and/or deifnitely do something more fitting in concern over the league's jersey logos. "Children are bombarded with violence. Violence is seen in television cartoons, news programs, and sit-coms. Violence and aggression should not be included in material presented to children, especially by baseball promoters."

The ABA has not issued an official reply to these concerns, but league co-commissioner, Mark Cooley, did say, "This is nuts! It's baseball for crying out loud. Don't these people have someone who is 'actually' causing psychological harm to harass?"

Buffalo Brahmas owner Don Bemont is quoted, "Aren't these the same two ass clowns that started all that stuff about Bugs Bunny being detrimental to children, because Yosemite Sam taught children that shooting guns was funny. C'mon, who are these people fooling? Well, I for one, am not going to put up with it. Marty take a memo, lets see if we can get a replica of the bull that Bugs matadors against... Yeah, you know, the one that swallows the rifle and then starts shooting ammo out its horns. We'll put that baby in right center. Everytime we hit a homerun, that little sucka is going to cock, load its tail, and fire off a few rounds. We'll show those pansies violence."

Fan reaction has been mixed. Many did not know that any such statement had been released, but those who had, had similar reactions as Mr. Cooley, and Mr. Bemont did. Joey Norton, a 14 year old that was entering the ticket gate at a Raleigh Roughneck game, said what may be the most insightful thought on the matter yet, "In school, we have to read Macbeth and the Iliad, and no one ever shouts them down as violent, or material that promote aggression. If you ask me, this attack on the ABA logos is just silly."

Bravo on the insight Joey. Lets see where these press releases lead, once the fan reaction gets out.

I'm guessing Cooley did them, because I'm pretty sure he did the AFA ones and they look exactly the same. For my league, I did most of the logos, but then Jason Hollis joined the league, and he's been a godsend.

Boston had the best logo (a take-off on the old Hartford Whalers) but it lists them as "out of the league".

Great logo! But I gotta ask, what the hell do you drill for in New Jersey?? Toxic waste?

I know, Boston and Jersey were two of my favorites. My favorite of Jason is the Gurnee 'Coasters logo.

In Jersey? You drill for oil. You just don't get it.

As a side note, my favorite is Mississippi, but artistically, I like Jersey.

Well, I think I'd get it if you actually did drill for oil in New Jersey. There's more oil along that disaster they call the "shore" than there is to drill for in under the Earth in NJ. Maybe they are re-drilling up all that used motor oil that New Jersey-living IROC and Trans Am owners pour into the gutter .
