Tips on keeping online league file SMALL?

I am looking for a few helpful tips on keeping my leagues league file small as can be. My league is only into the 3rd sim (3rd week of the year) and the file is already 2.5 megs which on a 56K takes about 14 minutes to upload. Anyone have any tips on what I should do to keep my file size to a minimum??? Any help would be great!!!!

A good idea is to also have the boxscores zipped and available for d/l for the GM who like to examine them. Just make it a separate zip file.

Yeah, the box scores can be half the size of the total league file.

Messages are often attributed to taking up a lot of space but in reality they are very small once zipped.

OK, well the thing is, my "Box" folder is only 995 kb. The "Messages" folder is only 2.92 kb. I can't see how these two small files can make the total zipped file so big. The biggest file is the "Players.dat" file and it is 31.8 megs large and I think that is the one that is making the league file bigger and bigger. Any help here on how to make that smaller if at all?

No, can't do it. It is what contains all the player data, etc.

Cut down the number of players in your league.

Infractions: 1/0 (0)
1. delete logo folder in the zip
2. delete expimp folder in the zip
3. delete boxscores and make them a separate download. that file gets really big later in the season so we also zip just the boxes from the latest sim so the owners can keep appending it to their old boxscores if they are on dialup.
4. delete messages and make it a separate download (we don't do this but i could help)_
5. set compression in winzip to Maximum
6. delete all photos if you have any in there

if you do all or most of these, you should get your league file to stay at 2-2.5 megs - i think most leagues with over 20 teams are probably around that size - the bad thing is that it's impossible to get it lower after doing these things - the good thing is that i won't get any bigger than 2-2.5 megs if you do these things.

I include all the box files from the last sim only. Once you zip all the files, sort within winzip on the date column and delete out the files that haven't changes since the last zip. That way you can include the box scores without a huge file each time.

Periodically I include all files so new owners etc. can get a complete history etc.

Getting rid of the logos, photos, and old boxscores is the best way to keep it manageable. Go Tribe looks to have spelled everything out perfectly. I use WinZip. After I compress everything, I list the files in the zip by date, and delete everything that does not show changes from the last sim.

31 Meg?!?

Something is wrong there.

Either that, or you have 100 teams in your league.
Or maybe that is all the retired players, if your league is really old.

My player.dat file is 10 kb

No way in hell your player.dat file is 31 megs.

I am half way through the first season with 24 teams and my zipped file with the boxes IN it is only 1.7 Megs zipped up.

You've done something wrong somewhere.

my league's is 38 MB. Compressed though the league file ends up being 4 MB or something total. The files compress pretty well.

It has to do with teams having way too many players. I'm thinking of having an offseason roundup where everyone has to trim their rosters down to 60 players total and delete all the rest.

Dude,
I didnt say that you said "after it was zipped" or "sipped" for that matter. Calm down.

For that matter, who cares what size it is prior to zipping it up? Zip it up and tell us what size it is then.

Your file is going to stay between 1.25Megs (first file of the year) and 2.0 Megs ( at the end of the year) IF you take the old boxscores and all the files that havent changed out of it each time. You can view the files by date and just delete all the ones that arent the current date. Then take out anything else that you want to, but your players.dat file HAS to be in there.

Zoloft, anyone?
