HoF or Not: Curt Schilling

So in the end, will Curt Schilling end up in the Hall of Fame?

He recently announced that he will play through the 2008 season. After posting a 15-7, 3.98 line last year, his overall numbers are creeping up there. He also has the whole bloody sock thing and was an ace on two World Series teams.

What do you think?

A very good case could be made for him. If he goes in, Kevin Brown should as well, although I think Schilling has slightly stronger stats.

I'd vote him in, but the question is "will he get in"? I say yes. If the writers won't do it, the Veterans Committee (if there is one 20+ years from now) will.

Schilling, Brown and Moose are 3 contemporary guys who have remarkably similar cases. I'd definitely put Schill and Moose in - and I could probably be convinced either way on Brown if we're talking about my own personal standard.

Schilling and Moose are just about the same career value wise, while Schill has a higher peak. Moose has been incredibly consistent with not quite as high a peak, while Brown's seasons aren't quite as top heavy as Schill, but not quite as consistent as Moose and a little lower overall career value wise.

I'd probably put all 3 in.

edit: There's really no way I wouldn't vote Brown in now that I think about it.

Schilling and Mussina definitely. Brown I think would have a harder time, but after looking over his numbers I'd consider him a HOF snub every year he didn't get in.

Brown's gonna be one of those mythical non-first ballot hall of famers. His stats are going to significantly improve after he retires to the point where he's HOF worthy.

I'm in two minds but I'm leaning towards no. Great pitcher, but just not quite dominant enough to make my hall. To me he just doesn't seem like one of the truly defining pitchers of the last 20 years like say Maddox, Clemens, Johnson.

To me he's in the Mussina, Brown bracket who were great guys for a long time, but aren't quite truly worthy of baseball immortality.

Then again I haven't lived with his career, so I'm sure many feel differently.

If Schilling gets in then Jack Morris has to get in.

I don't think any borderline pitchers (like Schilling) should get in until the writers pull their heads out and vote Blyleven in already.

How do you figure? Stieb is probably the best retired pitcher aside from Blyleven who isn't in the hall yet. About as underrated as Jack Morris is overrated. And, FWIW, Curt Schilling has been better than either of them.

He better have another good year or two, or he won't make it, bloody sock or not. His totals aren't that terrific, and he's had too many lost seasons where he was hurt or just not very good.

Not close to 300 wins + ERA 3.50-ish + 0 Cy Youngs = No HOF

He had some really great years, but he had some very average years too.

He only posted HOF-worthy numbers in 4 seasons. That's not enough to get you in. The time that he was legitimately great was very, very short, and even in that period, he wasn't far and away the best pitcher in the game like a Koufax or a Pedro.

No HOF for Schilling.
